Sideface:
boland: ... The wiring was all installed by the house lord, who had Vodafone cable. ADSL was split up, because he used to have 7 phones in the house...

You definitely need a master filter.
What you describe sounds like a fairly complex installation.
The tools you need will add to the cost - I would advise you to use a professional installer.
I presume that you are renting - if so, don't forget to ask permission from your landlord.

The only thing I want to do is to disconnect the ADSL line from the 7-RJ45-splitter and put it into the Master Splitter. From there to a RJ45/RJ11 socket and then to the modem. Easily reversible, right?

Master Splitter costs +- NZD 30. Some tools can be bought for I assume NZD20? Installer costs NZD 150-200, so that's a big difference.
I am not sure why it should be that complicated?

hio77: find it odd that chorus wont install with VDSL for bigpipe.

i read the chorus changes to VDSL including a splitter installation, as a must for EVERY connection regardless of contract term.

a filter is probably still a good 80% atlest required, due to the way daisy chained wiring is so common.. this line in question being a prime example of that.

Bigpipe is no nonsense, just good, cheap internet. I get free internet until March 31st, so no complaints from me. Probably they made a good deal with Chorus.
No modem from Bigpipe either, but as said, they're cheap and no contract.

NZD 150-200 is just a lot of money.
Looking at website of Slingshot: they also charge for on-site installation.

It's all rather complicated :(

It's not that they won't, it's more that we don't ask them to.

There is a charge for it from Chorus. Other ISPs choose to bear that charge for every customer and pass it on in their pricing, but we don't.

But the master filter installation is built into the VWS0 pricing over the 24 month period by Chorus and removed from the RSP's billing after that. It's not like the old days when it was an additional fixed fee.

If Bigpipe seriously aren't doing any master filter installs for VDSL2 customers it's the biggest piece of #fail NZ has seen since the decision by Telecom to partner with Yahoo for mail.

I would think so, I would prefer to incrementally pay $10 a month for 12 months or however.

Except there's no contract at all on bigpipe, so how would they get their $10 per month if people leave?

Think of the cost of the calls into the call centre complaining they have crap VDSL and getting drop outs

John

They don't have a call centre either. :D

Fine then brand damage,

Lol, You get what you pay for (currently free).

So far, most of our VDSL customers have been very satisfied.  We've had very few speed/drop-out complaints.

For those who have issues, they can get a splitter installed.  Up to them.

We can give them Coffeebaron's details (or others in other locations) and he does a great job for a great price.  No permanent loading up onto the retail price like other ISPs do, just a one-off charge.

Plenty of other ISPs giving free wiring in exchange for lengthy contract. We're providing an alternative for customers who can't or won't commit to a contract for whatever reason.

Maybe for people in a short term rental, for example.  Students who live in one place for only 9 months of the year had no options to get VDSL at all without coughing up ETFs or months they don't use before Bigpipe. Now they do.

Having said all that, we're not locked into any particular business model. We could quite easily change if customers demand it and don't mind doing so, but really I don't see how giving customers freedom of choice can be bad.

and this was exactly my understanding..

back when i first got vdsl installed, before the built in pricing, chorus techs didnt show up, nor call  for the installation, simply went to the cabinet, changed the connection over and was done with it for the day.

makes me question, if the tech isnt doing an install, why are they even bothering to turn up.

time and time again all over GZ, there are threads of VDSL filter installs gone wrong, and having to be fixed. where a installation isnt done at all, can only be asking for a worse condition of lines. VDSL is a very sensitive product, totally seem backwards not to require a filter.

being a naked product is simply not an excuse iver.

Wowowowww my topic is hijacked in Bigpipe or not discussion.
I don't want a contract, Bigpipe is cheaper (free atm), so I am happy. Service for this installation though would be a great addition to the package.

SO: Anyone willing to answer my questions about doing it myself? Would it really cost NZD 100 for all material? Any guide online somewhere?

Yeah but to be honest, this topic isn't much help for me. Only thing I hear is that my provider should fix it (it does not) and that is really hard to do and I should pay NZD 150 for installing a NZD25 item. Took a lot of time to investigate doing it myself and to come up with the questions, but no question answered after 3 pages.

I would like to ask employees of ISPs to not interfere in another ISP's discussions.

This is from all sides. People have been privately messaged now. Unfortunately is not the first time and I will have to start dishing out banhammers.

sorry about that.

The correct answer to your question is:

You can try and do it yourself if you really want to and just buy the parts etc, but we don't recommend it unless you have decent knowledge about this kind of thing. About the worst damage you are likely to do is cut your internet off altogether, which the tech would then fix anyway when you use the fallback option of getting it done professionally

You can get a technician to install one for you, likely cost $150-200.  the cost is that it will probably take 1-2 hours of a technician time so $150-200 is about right for that sort of job.

Hard for anyone to judge the best path for you because we don't know how knowledgable you are about this sort of thing.

Have you raised a support ticket with us about the speed problems you are facing?  It probably is wiring, (7 phone jacks is very rare and extremely likely to cause problems!) but good to exclude other issues first just in case.

Look at the cost form this perspective.  $150-200 sounds a lot, but you are getting 2 months free broadband worth that much anyway AND then the price after that is only $99 for unlimited VDSL, which is at least $10 cheaper than, say, Slingshot or Orcon's unlimited plans, AND you have no lengthy contract so you can leave anytime with no penalty if you aren't happy. So it's a pretty good investment. :)
