For me its not really about features, but the user experience, yes those Sanyos do all those things, but its awkward and not well thought through and yes most people don't mind it, but I do, Maybe thats why I bought a mac :-D

macuser: Well, they do everything, But the only people who do it well on Telecom in my opinion is Nokia, There user interface is much more up to standard I beleive, Sanyos and  Samsungs just seem to make life harder, there menu's dont seem right, and the style is way off.  On the otherhand, Theres SE, Nokia and Motorola on Vodafone, they just are stylish and I like using them.

I disagree, I have been using the old mans Samsung A701 Next G Mobile from Telstra, and I would have to say the menu structure of the Samsung W531 (Telecom CDMA/GSM) is much much better. The Samsung A701 is very heavily customised and everything seems to be around about way.

As for Motorola, some people will probably shoot me for this, but I hear they are not very reliable and have a high fault rate. Problems after problems that is, more than normal.

As for style, what ever floats your boat.

i disagree, i find the sanyo samsung phones much better performers on cdma than the nokia's which seem very much hack together jobs.

It's telecom themselves that make the phones suck, hideous wap charges which cripple the great browsers on the phones, limiting the use of user created ringtones by restricting the handset, setting up the photo messaging in such a way that it rescales images and blocks other content from being downloaded. Removing the ability for the phones to be used as tethered modems.

Trying to swing things back on topic, I was talking to a colleague who has been working in Australia, and commented on how good the mobile data services were at 850Mhz. The more directional (line of sight) nature of higher RF frequencies results in a better  coverage footprint for the lower frequencies.

This would certainly be a benefit in my part of the world (lower South Island), as 3G coverage is only attainable in metropolitan areas (if you can call Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown that??!?). You don't have to go very far from the city before the 3G symbol disappears from my Nokia.

Mind you, I can only comment from a Vodafone point of view.

Note that half of the problems the Next G 850mhz users are having is you need to be line of sight to get decent service unlike CDMA which is better in choppy topography. In NZ we have major issues with our topography so if this is the case on WCDMA 850 i am glad TNZ are not building a network in that Freq and are keeping CDMA for now.

all I care about is having a new network that allows me to roam internationally I personally care little for the features of the handsets the bottom line for me is phone calls

I TCNZ sales person knocked on my door 2 nights ago to tempt me with new TCNZ plans, I said I won't change my VF mobiles to TCNZ until a] I can roam internationally aka VF & b] do not have to sign a new contract for 2 years

A) as of 5th of July you can roam to 180 countries, around 30-40 more countries than VNZ with the Telecom Sim and a worldmode phone or a few less countries with a GSM handset. roaming is no longer a reason to stick to VNZ over TNZ especial with GSM 850 coming to TNZ,

B)you dont have to sign a 24 mth contract, you can get open term deals, 12 mth deals, prepaid and many others, but come on why would any one give you massive subsidy if they cannot guarantee a ROI by locking you in.

But I assume I need a "worldmode" handset, correct me if I am wrong but TCNZ cannot supply me a SIM now to put in my existing GSM handsets and go roaming

when TNZ goes live you can use a TNZ sim (for roaming) in a Worldmode handset and GSM handset and you will be able to roam with a TNZ number i.e 027 but it is likely that you would need an 027 or 021 Telecom connection first. If you actually wanted to get a world mode phone you could port your 021 to TNZ and continue to use this where ever you can use the world mode phone. I am unsure of the specific but this is the basics of it.

mjsit&t: as of tomorrow you can use a TNZ sim (for roaming) in any GSM handset as well as the Worldmode and you will be able to roam with a TNZ number i.e 027 but it is likely that you would need an 027 or 021 Telecom connection first. Thank you I had no idea of this {i.e. the ability to roam internationally on an existing [VF] GSM handset}

Amazing that TCNZ haven't been marketing this, it could be very useful to consider if I need to roam to a country where VF don't let me or the rates are uneconomical

time are truely changing

Right now all you need is a GSM handset, TNZ gave out Nokia 6100 handsets with an 02 sim card and you could roam.

As of the 5th they will be promoting world mode, not so much using any GSM handset but as you can imagine word will get round that of course you can, VNZ are talking about locking new handsets. The roaming advantage will swing to favour TNZ especially with world mode giving CDMA and GSM roaming at the same rates on the same phone with the same number. voice mail etc and more more countries.

A good improvement.

freitasm: 2100 MHz... Haven't they learnt from Vodafone's problems with this frequency?

Having said that, talking to some industry insiders, I believe Telecom might even pull one on this, and deploy it in a better fashion - seriously, no offense please, but I trust the Telecom engineers on mobile stuff.

Exactly what was Vodafone's problem with the 2100 frequency?

From your post I would assume that you work for Vodafone (obviously you dont, because we know each other) so you have the proper information about Vodafone's problems. As an outsider I believe you will never know what problems Vodafone have unless you have a friend who is a VF employee and telling you every day what is happening inside..

I is a kollege stoodent. Bee nice.

As a customer I just can't stand their inability to deliver the network coverage to where it matters - and to actually keep it working within acceptable parameters.

Sorry if the subject touches the sensitivity of people working in interested parties.

I agree here. I live in Hataitai (Wellington for outsiders), on Hataitai Road (main road in one of the bigger and most populated suburbs in the middle of the city) and I can't get 3G coverage on my phone. I stuggle to get more than about 3 bars of standard coverage for that matter. More often than not in recent weeks/months i get NO service at all for hours at a time.

It's not handset specific either as we have three different phones on 3 different accounts and all experience network coverage issues.

Surely when I live a mere 4 minute drive from the centre of the nations capital I should be able to get at least full voice coverage as close to 100% of the time as possible and I would have thought 3G coverage too.
