raytaylor: I did have a customer ring me yesterday asking if a letter he received in the mail was legit

You would hope they would have at least made it look legit. Eg only details the company would know, so you would know it was intact legit. In a telecom envelope, along with the bill for that month.

If Telecom thinks this change is going to make any real difference to their hopeless Yahoo mail system, then they're even dumber than I thought (which given the silliness of the "Spark" name change was already about as low as it could get). They need to get rid of the incompetent Yahoo.

I think they have already said that this doesn't have anything to do with what previously happened, it just increases security.  Not that they have actually said what was the cause of the previous problem , except it being a problem with yahoos systems. That said, it looks like spammers are having another go with that database they hacked, as getting a whole of  new emails coming through over the last few days to addresses that were only ever in my yahoo address book.

The settings for Apple Mail in the OP's posted Telecom link is for a previous version of Apple Mail. The current version is 7.2 under Mavericks. Anybody have the instructions and settings for this latest version?

I am not an xtra client but my relatives are and they all run the latest version of Apple Mail 7.2 and are asking me for instructions.

Cheers

It should be very similar. YouTube will also have heaps of videos on setting up email in it

Here are Telecom instructions:

1 - Open Mail and select the Mail menu
2 - Select Preferences
3 - Select the correct account on the left hand side under the Account heading
4 - Confirm the correct email address is in the Email Address field
5 - Confirm the correct name is in the Full Name field
6 - Confirm that pop3.xtra.co.nz is in the Incoming Mail Server field
7 - Confirm that the correct username is in Username field
8 - Check and re-enter your password in the Password field
9 - Confirm that send.xtra.co.nz: is in the Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) field, followed by your username (e.g. send.xtra.co.nz:johnsmith)
10 - Click Server Settings
11 - Click Continue
12 - Confirm in the Server port field that the port number is 465
13 - Put a tick in Use Secure Socket layer (SSL)
14 - Confirm Authentication is set to Password
15 - Confirm that the correct username is in username field
16 - Re-enter the password in the Password field
17 - Click Ok
18 - Click on the Advanced tab
19 - In the Port field enter in 995
20 - Confirm that the Authentication field is set to Password
21 - Close the Accounts window to Save your settings

Lines 1 to 9 are correct but from line 10 to 12 this section does not exist in the Apple Mail 7.2.
At line 13 you must click on the "Advance" tab and muddle your way through.

This is not good for the average user. Telecom should have multiple instructions for each significant version of email programs for at least back to Windows XP OL, OLE, entourage, Apple Mail etc.

But, hay, they are using Yahoo servers in Melbourne when any good ISP worth their salt and care about their customers have their own in house servers which are fully security protected and updated for today's nasties.

Ragnor: About time they got rid of smtp servers on their network that didn't require authentication and ssl.

That is what they are doing isn't it?

Yes, this is a good change, well overdue. Bad legacy setup is being removed, people using un-authenticated smtp in the clear will need to tidy up their end to be inline with best practice. Crappy old gear that can't do authentication or ssl will need to use a local/internal smtp proxy (pretty simple to setup).

There were several different issues over time

1: Yahoo cross site scripting exploit causing compromised accounts when people clicked on dodgy links while logged into their yahoo account > This was resolved iirc
2: Yahoo blog (old version of wordpress) compromised, database of email addresses stolen > Regular security update/audit of all website properties
3: Spam messages pretending to be from xtra.co.nz email > This could be fixed easily with a SPF record on xtra.co.nz (come on already!)
4: You can use smtp.xtra.co.nz without authentication and in the clear (not ssl) on Telecom's network (compromised machines can send alot of spam through a legit/trusted smtp server) > change to send.xtra.co.nz ssl and authentication required

Basically 1 & 2 are Yahoo's fault, 3 & 4 is Telecom/Spark's fault (4 because Telecom policy allowed this).

It's good they are fixing #4, now fix #3. Yahoo have fixed #1 and #2 I believe. #3 is the main reason people are still receiving spam pretending to be from xtra addresses.

l43a2: http://help.telecom.co.nz/euf/assets/help/ssl/

I am getting that error too. I checked the certificate, and it says it is registered to pop3r.xtra.co.nz, and not pop3.xtra.co.nz

Surely someone at telecom hasn't made a spelling mistake with the secure certificate?

Maybe due high loads, some people are getting sent to another mailserver which has the wrong certificate installed.
