A master filter for everyone. Most definitely. Able to run a line test for non Telecom customers. Not so much.

What do these tests involve and what sort of things can they find?

We occasionally get a single short ring from our phones, usually at night. Is this Telecom doing random line testing?

For those of us who are clueless, what is a master filter, where do we get one and where do we install it?

Since moving to NZ I've never got better than 700kbps up on my DSL (regardless of retail vendor). Which drives me bonkers, since things like Skype and FaceTime struggled with the low uprate.

A Chorus guy was here last month and tweaked a couple of things, so our downrate improved from 5-7MBps. But the up rate's the same.

If you just perform a search on Geekzone for "master splitter" you will find an absolute plethora of information about what they are and why they are a good idea. They split off the ADSL as it enters the premises and improve stability and performance.

What speed are you expecting? You'll only see roughly 800-900kbps maximum on ADSL or ADSL2+ because of the A in ADSL standing for asymmetrical.

I live in Mount Roskill, 3.1 km from the exchange as the copper flys, 1.5 km by road.

Chorus tell me that I should be getting download speeds of 10-20 Mbps but on a good day we get 5-6 Mbps and on a bad day 1-2 Mbps.
A Chorus man came today and replaced the connections at the pole and at the ETP and then tested the line and said that the absolute most that I could hope for is 7.5 Mbps.
Why the discrepancy between the Chorus Tech and the Chorus office?

When I look at the maps (from the Geekzone links) showing cabinets and exchanges there is a big black hole in the area that I live. It seems to me that the exchange is overloaded and there are too few cabinets. This seems peculiar to the Mt Roskill exchange as other exchanges have far more cabinets. When I research upgrade work in my area there is nothing slated, either cabinets or fibre. It seems that the people of Mt Roskill have been omitted for any previous cabinet plans and any future fibre plans.

Any ideas on who to contact to try to remedy this?

If you find out then let me know... as I am in a similar situation in Wellington where I am exchange connected and no sight of vdsl or ufb... yet I am a 15 min walk from the airport.

There are a few pockets of Auckland that have poor connectivity, apparently from just very poor copper. Mt Eden is another.
