Can I ask the OP where the setting is that allows software updates over cellular? I have checked my iPhone, and can't find a setting for "use cellular data for" that corresponds with software update. Is it "settings" or "app store" or something else again?

Sorry Op I agree with Steveon, you even said it was to do with IOS so why should Telecom come to the party, be nice  wouldn't it but the reality is they aren't at fault and the T&C have nothing to do with it as you used the data.

Strangely when I setup my Telecom plan I was given option of limiting speed or paying for overage so I accept that if I over use the data its my problem not theirs.  I also get warning when I'm at a certain percentage of my  plan so not sure what more they can do.

jeffnz that sounds like a result if they have changed the default settings....that would solve the problem- perhaps it was just because my wife signed up when thet deafaults were different?

I don't believe there is a setting to only allow software updates over wifi on iPhones, It is not a fault of Telecom, it is a fault of the user for pressing install on a software update without checking if the WiFi symbol was at the top or not.

However I do agree, Mobile data overage charges is so overpriced!

I've bee  with Telecom mobile for about 5 years so assumed it was always there and each time I've changed my plan I get prompted as to what I want, granted I like others on here know the pitfalls and the average user wouldn't think about t till they go over then all hell breaks lose, especially on GZ forums

SteveON: This is classic NZ ethos. Someone else should take the blame. You should change provider. Each has it's pros and cons. You don't have to agree with what we are saying but I believe that it's not telecoms fault. Otherwise everyone would do this and it would become a nightmare.

Simply taking ownership of your mistakes should be enough.

It's not really that fair to bill overage at a 15x premium over prepaid pack cost imo, it's just price gouging.

settings, iTunes & App Store, Use Cellular Data (on/off)

If I remember correctly apps over 50Mb require WiFi and that is a setting that Apple has agreed to with the Mobile Operators

skl17: SteveON again, you miss the point too.....I accept that the Ts and Cs are the Ts and Cs- this is simply an inadvertent error, which is not evident until you get the bill.....in principle, according to the T's and C's it is the user's fault, but I am asking that the provider recognises that this is an inadvertent error, for which no warnings were received.

Agree in theory, however the application would be fraught with difficulty as it is reliant principally on the customers word that is was a genuine mistake.  Any policy/process around this would be easily open to abuse and suspect this is one reason it hasn't been contemplated.

So, I am simply asking that Telecom perhaps reviews it's policies to avoid this sort of thing happening again to other customers who will not be aware of the situation until they receive a massive bill.

A fair request, but ultimately up to the provider to decide the policies/products it is going to offer.    I would love for McDonalds to change their shakes so they are colder, less frothy, and improve the taste so they are more like Burger King's.   Ultimately I can make the suggestion but if that product/service is not available I can choose to spend my money at Burger King.  Free market rules!!

Now the cap is in place for this particular account, it won't happen again here.....

Great.  I must admit I was offered this option when I last signed my son up on his mobile a handful of months ago

I have just paid the massive bill!

ouch!

That's just for using cellular data for the App Store and iTunes Store though- not the software updates.

And yes, anything over 50mb it will ask you to connect to wifi.

Couldn't apple be liable for the costs, if their update that they released, modified the settings removed the restrictions you had in place, which resulted in you receiving the huge bill? It is not something you would think about checking after an update. Maybe they have got an out clause in their terms when you apply the update. I can understand why it isn't Telecoms fault, as they weren't the cause for the problem.

I actually had a similar problem after I applied an android update, and it reset all my settings without my knowledge. By default it enabled mobile and removed all the quotas I had in place, and used about $50 of credit on my prepay account. Luckily I use prepay, so was never going to use more data than I had already paid for. But I didn't go to vodafone to complain, because it isn't their fault that I applied an updated on my phone. I could have complained to samsung, but then again it wasn't enough to bother with. I wouldn't be surprised if this sort of thing happened a lot.

oh the OP is talking about an iOS update that changed the iOS updating mechanism to update over mobile broadband, so it downloaded another iOS update not app updates?

Last time I updated my iDevice it told me to do it over WiFi and I had to click a button to acknowledge I was doing it over the air over mobile broadband instead of WiFi

a dialog box does come up asking you to acknowledge when you're doing iOS updates over mobile broadband instead of Wi-Fi

A friend's car blew up recently because of a new girlfriend update! (The old girlfriend snuck over in the night and drained the oil out of his car)

He rang up Holden and pleaded for a new engine, saying it wasn't his fault there was no oil in the car, it was the girlfriend update!  (He hadn't noticed the tiny oil warning light)

For some reason they haven't replaced his engine yet.

Maybe they think any GF that knows about oil and where it drains was a keeper.
