+1 for CustomerLink - but is that available to residential accounts through Telecom? (It isn't through us)

I believe it still is if your original number was with Telecom.

DNS is not limited to ipv4 of course...

we a few yrs ago switched from a residential address in St Andrews,(Vodafone) Hamilton to Frankton Hamilton. ( Orcon Genius) and kept our same number.
Was that due to some VOIP configuration??. Donth think they would be on same exchange ??

Of course not, but current infrastructure is very biased towards it.

Just move to voip and enjoy all the services that telecom charge a large fortune for like caller ID and voicemail.

Leave the PSTN relic behind ;)

I used World Exchange to do this, but didn't use VoIP. I just used their call forwarding service. Cost (was a year ago) $10/month.

In a future with a DNS based system for numbering would there even a need for a centralized exchanged switches any more?

Every carrier/voice provider just runs dns for their numbers (internet all the things)... must be scary for incumbents with massive legacy equipment/systems...

Interesting read, would be great but think its more likely that numbers will eventually be replaced with email type addresses connected to services such as Skype,Lync and viber. When it comes to landline type services telcos are still VERY clunky. For example the porting processes takes 2 weeks to be completed from ordering, and in my experience it will get stuffed up a lot of the time.
