So why not just hand out lots of the business grade femtocells in residential areas of need and have the customers power and broadband do all the work FOR you (vodafone)

Not everyone has a master filter installed. And imagine the complaints when trying to use 4G when it's attached to someone's congested DSL1 Conklin connection :(

Surely VF (et al.) could easily see which customers to target with this 'free upgrade' to ensure this didn't happen, and even check usage patterns (volume not specific sites) to ensure great likelihood for success... WAY cheaper than new towers all over the place AND also needs no building concents for the NIMBY folks to rage at?

While Telecom are doing this I am enjoying going to many many parts of the country with Vodafone 4G - friends on Telecom, not so much.

And so when you hit a 4G spot how do you show off how fortunate you are? Do you download a movie to prove the point? Do you post on Facebook 3 seconds seconds faster than them? Do you show them your Speedtest result? If yes, you're not much of a friend.

I don't know why people focus solely on speed when they look at 4G - to me this is only a minor benefit of the technology.

LTE is a significant move away from circuit switched based technology to a full IP based technology. LTE also offers vastly superior RF spectral efficiency and means that the congestion in heavily congested areas and events can be improved significantly. Look at the issues like the Dunedin CBD where (unless things have changed in the past few weeks) Telecom 3G has been totally unusable for months for data because of overloaded channel elements. Physical limitations such as the noise floor still exist, but these significant increases in spectral efficiency simply make the mobile experience so much better.

Yup my speed went from 0.05Mbits ps to 80Mbits ps

Definitely fixed the congestion bit so far

^^What he said

The best thing about 4G is the much improved latency, being that it is fully IP. My SIP client on my phone can now be on all the time and very very rarely does it need to fail to forwarding the call to mobile. Speed is great but not a massive benefit.

How much of an improvement is 700mhz over 850mhz in terms of coverage?
Will we see a noticeable drop in dead spots?

i think it depends on if the tower density is the same, if it is then yes you would is my guess

I would have thought that by using LTE at 700 they could get the same coverage as 3G 850.
LTE 700 Coverage would not be stronger than 3G at 850 as this would result in data but no voice services.

Well, Im sure we'll move to Voice Over LTE in the next few years which will solve that problem

Hopefully but Telecom still don't even have HD voice on their mobile network so it may take awhile...

It will appear to be better if only because it goes a yard further, bends a yard better, and the speed difference.
And the biggest gains should be to rural users who may have access to better hardware that's better optimised for RBI style applications

For those of us holding a block to our heads we maynot see much of a difference because the handheld device will be the limitation
