Imagine my shock when I came here from Canada (just visiting NZ for a year life experience). I was used to using/living with unlimited high speed since roughly 1995-96, yet in NZ in 2004 the offer was 1 GB a month. I couldn't stop myself from laughing at what was I going to do with a whole 1 GB/month.

Sheesh - 1gb/month was like a fart in the wind....

Fortunately 10GB/month just started to become available. Still even then though.....

But in the same token....I was happy to have that vs dial-up!

I got Jetstream - 256k - in 2003. I don't remember what my cap was, I think 3GB. Never really smashed through it though - that was a lot of MP3s.
I had an Internal modem - no issues with it.

I opened a small Internet Café the same year (and was the first customer on ADSL where we live) - the techs that set it up weren't sure it was going to go (not cabinets back then) but it did - we got about 4 mbps down. I was paying about $300 a month I think for FS/FS and about 10GB (I think). We had 15 PCs connected to it, sharing off a dedicated little PC with an internal modem. We built a little Linux box to share out the internet and do a bit of shaping and filtering. It worked really well, and we were hugely popular with tourists, kids playing 'Counters' after school and people who just enjoyed the internet at way better than Dialup. Over the next 3 years that I owned it, the internet got cheaper, then ICONZ trialled a wireless system and we were the guinea pigs so got Unlimited 10Mbps each way (man that was awesome!).

I was down in Dunedin 10 yrs ago!

I remember using kiwi online dial up... http://www.kol.co.nz/ (the company has since closed down this year)

And then jetstream, saving up all the GBs until few days before it renewed...

I forst got jetstream when it was just a 500mb cap that was never enforced so was easy to do lime 5gig a month - good old TMD moviez _b - then it got increased to 128k/128k with 10gig and unlimited national (good old days of DCNZ) and restarting your modem befroe so the usuage
could never be counted _b

One of my first ADSL modems was one of these. No wireless and only ADSL1, but man that thing was stable. No power supply required either :)

We got "Jetstart" at home on launch day, which was late 2001 in Whakatane. Long-time user here :)

Edit: We were on the nationwide satellite system in Palmerston North (no free call area so we must have paid extra for the 087 number).

I have very positive memories of the Nokia M1122 router that Telecom were supplying (for business use?) in the early days. Highly reliable as best I recall and relatively slylish piece of kit for the time. Pretty reasonable web interface for troubleshooting and configuring pinholes, though working out the way to tell it to let GRE (protocol 47) through for PPTP VPNs took quite a bit of research. Nokia stopped making DSL equipment in 2002 so they were discontinued to my disappointment at the time.

Urgh...dont mention 087.... freaking nightmare that was to deal with on the IHUG helpdesk... :D

Starnet/Ultra was a great product for its time, except you still needed to dialup ;)

Hoorah for the Nokia M1122. I still have mine, and it still worked a couple years ago when I last tried it. Rock solid and not bad looking either.

Gosh I remember Starnet too, used to get 1Mbps or more, which was pretty good in those days.
