The 5800 Express Music came in at least two variants.

The one sold here was the variant for the Vodafone network. You need the NAM (North American) variant. Later Nokia's were Penta band and worked on both networks.

I bought a NAM one which I still have though don't use since I bought the E7 for the physical keyboard. It's yours for $100 if you want it.

The 5800 was a great music phone with good features.

It's my understanding that a cheap android phone will probably be a terrible experience, they're typically underpowered.

The Lumia 520 is widely accepted as being the smoothest operating budget smartphone currently on. The market.

(I've never used either)

Definitely used to the case. There's some solid contenders at the lower end now, but I'm less familiar with the Spark/Skinny lineup (For obvious reasons!), and wouldn't recommend entry-level for folks who prioritise a quality music experience.

The Moto G is always a solid go-to and easy recommendation, but if music's the intention, would need to wait for the 4G version as the currently sold variant lacks a micro SD slot.

Unfortunately, I don't think the OP is going to find anything all that good for $100 on TradeMe. The Lumia 520 is by far the best bet in that space.

Whats the make and model of your android phones? I want something better, not too fat, in similar to the 5800. I hate iphones and the big samsung stuff. Not really looking to spend big bucks. I figure I'll settle for something around 100 bucks or more off trademe. never saw the point of a $500 + phone for my requirements.

I had the Nokia 5800. The version sold in NZ only has 900/2100 3G so no good for Telecom/Skinny. I like Nokias so got the N9 on Trademe - was about $100 after I waited around a bit. I'm happy with my purchase at the moment and it supports the frequencies used by Telecom/Skinny. The N9 was a bit of a stillborn platform, so if you are an app user this phone is definitely not for you. If you are nostalgic person like me, this phone represents what Nokia might have been if Stephen Elop had not switched it in the direction of windows phone.

Make sure that you don't get something too old; there are still a few Android 2 devices out there, and music was an afterthought back then.

A swap doesn't work for me, I don't need a Vodafone device and the 5800 is surplus to requirements. It's in very good condition having always been housed in a case. I think it's worth more than just giving away, if you think $100 is too much make me an offer.

I might end up talking you out of looking at my 5800 but as a Wongtop has said the N9 is a very good option, if you want a Nokia. It's an excellent phone with 16 GB of inbuilt memory. You might not get it for $100 but at the prices on Trade Me it's very good value IMO. It comes with some very good pre-installed apps, e.g. Maps and Drive which you already have on the 5800, Skype, WiFi hotspot, Accuweather, and if you use them ( I don't) Facebook and Twitter, plus several more apps. There's the inbuilt Swype input option with the keyboard which is very good once you get used to using it. The camera is very good also.

As Wongtop mentioned the N9 was stillborn but it has a better OS than the Nokias that followed the N9. Thanks to that clown from Microsoft, Stephen Elop, Nokia really lost the plot when they dropped the N9 and it's OS.

There aren't as many apps but there are some good apps on the Nokia Store and quite a few good third party apps from other sources. I've got apps like Nokia Public Transport (which is very good when travelling overseas), Sportstracker, Opera Mobile (which I highly recommend over the stock browser), World Clock, FM Radio, Cute Radio (internet radio which replaces the defunct Nokia internet radio), ring tone restore (which allows you to select Beep or Silent modes for a predetermined time), screenshot, Battery usage and many more.

If you're happy with what the 5800 can do for you then you'll be more than happy with the N9. The N9 has a lot of unique and neat features many of which you stumble across by accident, like the magnifying glass feature in the Notes app. Swipe across to switch between apps, swipe down to close, tap to wake, clock on the sleep screen, text, email, and missed call alerts on the sleep screen etc etc.

The N9 has the advantage it has a Penta band transceiver and it can operate on almost any network anywhere in the world so you're not stuck with having to stay with a provider and if you travel overseas you have a chioce of providers.

The N9 is gorgeous, a beautiful device running a beautiful operating system. What might have been, eh?

It also received the best review of a smartphone that I've ever seen, from design blog Domus.

Only caveat is that, without expandable storage, it may not be suited to music junkies wanting to take a lot with them on the go.

Don't forget If you do by a cheap Android and don't like the music player you can always add an after market player. Personally I use poweramp and find it very good. Pretty customisable to

thanks guys, I think wongtop & technofreak has convinced me enough to just the Nokia N9. I do intend on traveling around a bit so a good phone that works with all networks and I can take with me for stuff would be good. I really dislike the Iphones & Windows phones.

Oh, what might have been? So very true.

A sad end to a promising OS, though it still lives on in the Sailfish OS and the Jolla phones being made by former Nokia employees.

Certainly an excellent review from Domus, though I don't agree with his claim Nokia couldn't compete in hardware and OS. Meego was way ahead of WP when it was released, it has had only one update yet still is better than WP in many ways. e.g. importing .ics files into the calendar, Meego can handle as many entries as you like at once WP can only handle one at a time. I say Nokia could compete on OS and hardware, the N9 proves this.

Yes, lack of expandable storage is a downside, but 16 GB is a fair amount and there are 32 GB versions available too.

Haha. :P okay So I ended up buying a N9 almost new off trademe for $100... its in ChCh so who here is from chc....Ya na... I'm kidding..

But I will sell you my xpress music 5800 for like $65 shipped. :P ( I got almost all accesories, the box and everything and its in good condton like less then a year old.;) )

Now I can move my 021 vodafone number to Skinny and later for global roaming or switch between networks when I travel! yey!
I dont use any tweeter or social media or crap, just txt, music and calls and maybe GPS, So hope the phone wont be too complex. I wonder, if Skinny has got any Free online text features like My Vodafone?

I Hate the N9. And these modern phones, The screen doesn't have a wallpaper, i cant close aps, or quickly (wheres the x cross symbol??) unless its a better UI exprience for people just looking for simple stuff then i might just sell this off with the sim, screw skinny.

I'm not sure which screen you are referring to but you can put anything you like on the unlock sceeen.

The N9 is probably the easiest phone to close apps on. Just swipe down from the top of the screen - app closed.

Have you had time to look at the onboard user guide?

Set up Swype as your keyboard, it takes some getting used to but very good once you master it.

Meego is very different from S6 V5

Some of the features of the N9 are not immediately obvious. Stick with it you'll I'm sure you'll become a fan.
