BigHammer: Exactly as sbiddle mentioned, just connect the WAN port of your LinkSys WRT1900AC to your ONT. Done. You're in business. (Note: You may have to update the firmware of the WRT1900AC, as old firmware apparently didn't support VLAN tagging.)

If you need to, think of the ONT as the modem (it isn't, but it sits between the router and the cable coming in to the house, as a "modem" would on a copper line).

umm I only have one question about the original post.

who told you that you couldnt buy the business modem?
it's on the website saying just call the 0800 number to order it.

Quite correct, it does say to do that on the http: // www .spark . co .nz / business / shop / internet / modem link (it wont let me post the actual link, cause I am new), for $173.04 plus GST.

But I rang both the 0800 800 123 number as well as the 0800 business number and was told by BOTH people I talked to, that since I wasn't a business customer I could not purchase that modem. I mentioned that I wanted to buy it, not that I expected it as the free modem for hooking up. But they both re-iterated the same comment that I wasn't a business customer and it wasn't available for me...

Strange - I have just had UFB installed by Spark and similarly wanted a GigE LAN to support a SAN drive so ordered (and paid for) a HG 659b which came with the free Hg630b within three days - no problems, no questions..
My current issue is getting the HG630b to act as a bridged switch and second WiFi access point.
Time to give Spark another call ?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I wouldn't expect them to offer any support for a totally unsupported custom configuration.

If you want an access point use a proper access point - using a router as one is always a duck tape solution.

I think they might have mis-understood me and thought I wanted that one for free (as part of the hookup offer). But am sure that I was very explicit when I said I wanted to purchase it.

Not really going to worry about it now, as it turns out I don't need the equipment after all because my router can connect directly to the ONT.

Hi all - I would appreciate some help....I have just had fibre installed (Spark) ONT, router etc The router is a Huawei HG630b. Internet is up n all that. But, what I wanted to ask is whether anybody has set up an internal server (setup as LINUX server and gateway) so all traffic goes through the server (including wireless)?? I have had this up and running on ADSL/ADSL2 for like 10 years.....
My server has 2 NICs 1 for LAN and 1 for WAN. My setup would be, the WAN NIC plugs directly into the Huawei HG630b and the LAN NIC plug into a switch for PC, wireless etc. BUT, the Huawei HG630b packs a hissy fit even when the server is re-configure to suit the IP range of the Huawei HG630b.
It's a fairly simple operation, but, now i'm having to consider other configurations, I have tried server, PCs, WAPS etc running directly into the switch, which is connected to the Huawei HG630b and works ok, but, i'm unsure as to how I would setup the services I have running on my server that need to be accessed via the internet. I hope this makes sense....Anyway, any sound advise would be much appreciated. Chur

Why would you want a complex setup like that with double NAT?

If you're set on having your server handle all the network stuff then you should set that up to do the VLAN tagging and PPPoE.

Hey sbiddle - I have that setup to: run my own biz email server, host websites, allow password protected shares for client work, log all traffic, have multiple user management, content filtering etc, etc. It's not that complicated really....

I didn't mean complicated in that you want a server - I meant complicated in the fact you seem to want a double NAT setup which is something that should be avoided at all costs.

If you want to user your server you just need to ensure you're correctly tagging your traffic.

In this day and age and with the technology available why would you not buy into a gigabit router. The guy has the potential for gigabit into his house, buy a router that'll at least let him connect to greater than 100 if he wants to. He may choose to jump from Telecom in the near future.

Being with SNAP, I use the Fritz!Box - a great router with tons of capability aside of it's routing functions.

Waste of money buying yesterdays technology with a tomorrow internet connection.

How did you manage to get that connection? Can't find anything about it on Snap's site.
