patdude123: I dont think most pople in GZ are tolls users and I also dont think they appreaciate you using GZ as your personal advertorial outlet - in fact I think the GZ rules specifically forbid it... A beer sounds fine - your shout

Before this goes too off topic...

Yes, posting press releases it's a bit tacky. I sometimes post in the forums press releases I receive when I don't think they should be in the news section. But I agree companies posting the press releases directly it's a bit strange.

Why? Let's see this way - this is not YOUR voice. This is the USERS' voice. A few companies asked to open forums on Geekzone and we obliged - Xnet for example, and they have a very active participation, and people love it. Or TelstraClear who had a special profile created for them to post in the forums - and albeit not as active as Xnet they still work they ways here - unlike Telecom and Vodafone, who have lots of lurkers but never got officialy out of the closet.

Back to Xnet... Just read their forum and you will see people enjoy the personal service received there. And they are actually interested in solving problems, if any, when it happens. And they do it here.

I tried, and tried, and tried, but neither Telecom or Vodafone are interested in this kind of participation. PErhaps too afraid of what they would find?

As for the Geekzone profile: we have more than 10,000 New Zealand users registered in the forums. Only the most "hardcore" geeks actually post all the time and those probably are heavy VoIP users, but the vast majority is not. You'd be surprised if you could see the number of unique visitors we receive in the forums every day, and how many posts we have - it's a lot of lurkers around here, so don't discount them, because they still use POTS and related services.

I'm all for companies announcing their wares online. As long as the subject title is clear then it is up to the individual to proceed or not. What I am curious is why is our Fair Weathered friend is posting so feverishly now? I noticed VF representatives were very quiet on a few posts a while ago during the VF billing upgrade outage.

Lets see some official voicing when the ship hits rocky seas as well please - anyone can speak up when its good news.

I should actually clarify this: at least Vodafone's Paul Brislen posts here and announces he's from Vodafone in his signature. We don't have anyone from Telecom New Zealand...

bradstewart:
PaulBrislen: Vodafone today announced it would also like to give something to Telecom Xtra customers following their email problems experienced last week.

That's really nice of you guys. What about your own customers? I don't recall getting anything for the extended period of time we were unable to check our account balances during your billing system 'upgrade'.

I think it is a little hypocritical for Vodafone to be taking shots at Telecom for an outage during a system changeover given the length of its billing system outage during the upgrade .

Don't forget the week long e-mail outages ihug had, and there was more than one... And e-mail was LOST as well, not just delayed.

Vodafone, pony up with some cash to charity and we will take you seriously (Well, as seriously as Xtra is taken :)

I think you may be refering to that poor 76-year-old lady, whose husband is critically ill in hospital that vodafone's shop in Birkenhead abused and threw our of their shop!

I know There's a joke in there somewhere about Telecom giving to charities, and vodafone taking from them :-)

Vodafone/Ihug aren't exacting the best at evading those outages... the email outage with Ihug comes to mind or the billing system with Vodafone.

That is, if they aren't pulling the mat out underneath you when it comes to certain broadband plans... connection speeds or latency...

Perhaps because Vodafone got caught up apologizing for the wrong thing?

I commend Telecom for their credit to customers, and donations to charities, it's turned my impressions of Xtra around somewhat.

Admiting your mistakes and apologising goes a long way. Buying flowers is even better. For this I think Telecom deserves some credit.

NEWS FLASH!!!!!!

iHug have had at leat 5 bad and full email outages in the last 12 months...
iHug have the worst helpline service short of Woosh and NEVER admit they might be at fault.
iHug also have the sloppiest, slowest "broadband" internet I have ever used.
iHug also like to change terms of plans on people on short notice.

Xtra has had one during a critical system upgrade while bringing in better service and admitted it..

Go with the Orcon deal people, it's a bit more to pay but well worth it and their advertising methods are honest, also apparently if you are transferring from another ISP, there is also no contract with the Orcon deal either.
If it's a new connection then you just pay the $99 connection fee if you leave before 12 months (AND you get to keep the $60 Dynalink modem orcon gave to you.)

Also your email address is yours for life, even if you choose to leave Orcon (unlike ihug whom will charge you to keep it active)

That is so funny.

Telecom offer 1 week free broadband- I personally think thats not enough (to those affected) even though I wasnt affected. But 10 points for trying.

Vodafones reply- I love how Vodafone think they are funny. Considering the only word their marketing team know is FREE!
The free broadband promo has been going on since the bubble burst. In fact, Vodafone released 12 months free broadband to counter Bubble when Telecoms Bubble leaked... somewhere online, cant remember where though :P

But lets be honest, free broadnad for a year.
Id sign up if I knew the chances were better than %20 that I wouldnt get stuffed around by a Telco, yes Telco, as in not Voda, not Telecom.

Surely there must be enough geeks here on Geekzone to start our own Telco.
