This works great, I've used it a few times in the past to get around the SSL issue on older apps/devices.

I have looked at OfficeMail, tdgeek, but can't see how it would solve my problem. Can you talk this thick OP through what I need to do, please? Just a brief idea would be very helpful. Thanks

If you have got web hosting, then they may provide non ssl smt' email over port 26. Mine does.

I think stunnel or getting a raspberry pi would be the way to go. Would you rather run software on a computer that would always need to be on if you were sending emails from the printer. Or would you prefer a little box that costs sub $100 and that would do the job for you. I even have an old NLSU2 that could do it. Setup a gmail account and run all the forwarding via that.

What is a Raspberry PI? If I go the little box way, would that mean I retain my current Xtra email address, and have a separate gmail address solely for sending the fax to my Xtra address?

A non ssl device is only usable over a network you entirely trust back to a server you control.

I would be looking at a return on it as it is not fit for purpose for working with a server on the Internet.

The fact that some ISPs are negligent enough to still operate non ssl mail services is a distraction from the issue that no ssl means it's unfit.

In the too-hard basket having to change your email address that your clients have been using forever!

What about I just set up PC-Fax receive, leave my computer on and direct the faxes into a Dropbox file?

You sound like a business. Why on earth would you use an ISP email address??

You might have rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act to be honest, under the not-fit-for-purpose provisions. If the store told you it supported Fax-to-SMTP or it was clear on Brother's website it did without the exception that some may not work (i.e. only doesn't work with providers that run SSL-only configurations) then personally I would try and return it and get one that supports it.

The specs for secure SMTP were originally (it seems) RFC 2487 (SMTP with TLS - Jan '99) and RFC 3207 (SMTP with TLS (major update) - Feb '02) they are quite old, and for Brother (who you have tried to remedy this with) not to fix, I'd say there is a potential case.

Just my 2c.

Edit: Just after I hit Post, I realised, you said that this is for a rural farm, most rural farms get considered business and CGA doesn't apply. There may be other legal rights though that apply.

That is correct, Clint. And the email address of the printer is the same as my email address. How does the stunnel work?
