trig42: No NZ new iPhones are locked to a network (so if you but an iPhone from Spark, 2Degrees or Vodafone, it will work on any network).
It looks like you have acquired a stolen or lost phone. I hope you got it cheap, or you can get your money back from the person who sold it to you. If it is stolen, you have both broken the law (receiving stolen goods).

richms: Make a police complaint. They are looking into the trade of stolen stuff on facebook etc at the moment so they may actually do something for a change.
