richms: Does the router in the lounge have an ethernet wan port on it? If so just plug that into the ONT and job done.

unless I'm misunderstanding, it sounds like this is the solution.

to the OP: How do you currently connect your router to your garage modem?  Ethernet I presume.

If so,  just leave the router where it is, unplug the ethernet cable that connects the router and modem at  the modem end and plug it directly into the ONT.  you do not need to buy anything new (assuming your router is pretty good)

stone2: What about this one. A better wireless signal would be good in the garage. Currently very poor.

That would be nice. You will want to read the manual thoroughly though.

This is the wireles router thats currently in the lounge (150M Wireless Lite N Router TL-WR741ND) it does the job but hardly high end or even full 802.11n.

I have the DSL-504T in the garage, which goes to the wireless router in the lounge. Included in the network are  a couple of switches, several pc's and tv's and a couple of tivo's. Everything connected by cat5.

Yes the wireless router has a wan port but don't think it would be very fast or even capable. Wasn't very expensive...

The link I posted earlier says this is an "Gigabit AP". Would this do what I need? Seems really well priced and I don't know if it does vlan tagging. Just can't spend $200-$300 on a router at the mo.

Sounds like you have a good setup already.  Do you use the 504T for any wireless duties or does it just send the internet to the router in the lounge?

If that is the case, think of the ONT as replacing the 504T in your home network and try what Bigpipe said - when ONT is installed, take out the cat5 from the 504T and stick it in the ONT.  As router in the lounge has a WAN port it might work straightaway. Then get a different router if you find that is limiting your network. If you need more wireless signal in the garage would need another AP there fed by ethernet back from the lounge router (or other existing network switch that is nearer).

As you have ethernet connecting your main devices already, your wireless doesn't need to be that amazing, and your existing wireless devices would unlikely be able take advantage of it anyway (device also limited to wireless-n). Look into getting a router that can support 5GHz wireless-ac at some point, but only when you have more devices that also support it.  I would stick with what you have for starters and see how it goes. I happily get 29 down/9 up from my freebie hg630b over wireless-n (line speed for me is 30/10) . You won't get 100/20 over wireless-n from your tp-link, but you don't need to either.

The 504T doesn't have wireless just sends the internet to the one in the lounge. It goes to a few devices and switches on the way first.
If I plug the cable from the 504T into the ONT it would go first to a switch before going to the wireless router in the lounge. There are other devices connected to that first switch. Would they work or would everthing need to be connected to the wireless router in the lounge first?

That mikrotik might be a bit advanced for me but there are some great user reviews on it. What about this one for a beginner? Netcomm NF7 N300 Fibre WiFi Gigabit Router

You would need a straight run of cable from the ONT to the lounge router WAN, and then back from the router to any switches.   Lounge router needs to be configured to be the DHCP controller assigning IP addresses to the devices on the network.  If there is currently a switch between the garage and the lounge router that means the 504T currently has that responsibilty.

The TP-Link has 100Mbps LAN and WAN ports. You will lose a bit of UFB speed but will be negligible, and having that router as the main hub instead of the old 504T will improve the rest of your network.  I would see how it goes with existing kit.

Thought so, not really possible or worth the hassle of getting the cable there (house on a concrete slab, roof cabling only option and I'm not doing that again. lol)

Just wish I could make an informed decision on a UFB wireless router.

Anyway must sleep now. Will check this post again tomorrow.
Cheers

Was looking at the Draytek Vigor 130. But someone said it's not compatable for UFB. Their website claims it is.
Was that member incorrect?

Sorry for dragging this on but hey its a good learning experience.

The Draytek DV130 is an ADSL/ADSL2/VDSL2 device with no Ethernet WAN port, so it's certainly not compatible with UFB. Where did you read it is?

My advice from earlier still stands. Buy a Netcomm NF8AC and be done with. If you can't afford it, then sign up with an ISP giving a decent router for free, which is the case with many these days. Buying a cheap device for a BYOD ISP will just end in disappointment, especially if you're aiming for the 100Mbps plan.

A big learning curve if you're new to Mikrotik.

However, all my gear is Mikrotik.

I read it here: http://www.draytek.com.au/products/xdsl-routers/vigor130/

By the way I appreciate all the advice so far.

That's a pretty bad mistake. No it definitely is not UFB capable.

define flakey? poor coverage, drops out?

whats your wifi enviroment like round you? how many access points on your channel? where is the router in relation to things like fridges, cordless phones, microwaves? these all play a part in how your wifi preforms
