Nice to know I'm not the only one with this weird fault...

While I agree that fibre is install is just a coincidence, wouldn't fibre and xDSL enter the same core network via different edge routers?  Then share the same cached content and exit the network via same gateway(s)?

I've been getting similar problems on Slingshot UFB - speedtest is fine, pings seem OK, most websites load quickly but some (telegraph.co.uk probably worst) take ages to load or fail.  I keep thinking I've fixed it, but it seems like a game of whack-a-mole.  Things tried so far:

  • updated WiFi drivers on laptop
  • reset modem/router (Tripleplay)
  • Changed DNS services from unotelly to slingshot, and manually entered these in laptop IP settings instead of just pointing at router
  • reset modem
  • flushed DNS
Problem is, these all seem to fix the problem, but it always comes back.  Further complicated by having upgraded to Win 10 about the same time a getting UFB

Struggling to think of what to try next, short of installing wireshark and looking at what is happening in detail

Nope.. the Chorus copper network is physically completely separate from the Chorus UFB network.
The Chorus UFB core is a completely new build from Copper. Most of the Copper network is still on a "shared" network infrastructure between Spark and Chorus.

Whereas on the Spark side ADSL,VDSL and UFB all go into the same box(s) and are managed exactly the same so there is no difference on the north side of the BNG.

Helpdesk was initially frustrating not understanding the problem, finally got put through to level 2 support.  No remedy yet, but at least they're now looking at it trying to figure out the issue.  There's maintenance tonight where I'm connected but is unrelated.

Do you have a black technicolor router if so your issues sound typical for Windows 8.1 and 10

More details here

If you've got one then patch it and get Spark to replace it.

Definitely getting higher pings on Spark speedtest sever (40ms) usually around 8-10PM. MyRepublic and CallPlus servers are both fine (4-5ms). When this happens, most websites would start to halt particularly streaming services like Twitch and Netflix, but even local text sites would take 5-6 seconds to load.

It usually goes away after an hour or two and the starting time would vary from 4-5PM to anywhere between 8-11PM.

On Spark Fibre.
