I think if all the anti-Telecom complainers had put their money where their mouth is, they could have built their own evil multi billion dollar network by now; so that way we could have at least 2 evil networks to choose from Laughing

I think that it sounds easier than it really is.  I keep on thinking how cheap it would be to roll out fibre on the poles of the electrification main trunk railway line.  But NO it's not easy as Clear/Telstra have an exclusive deal and is preventing others putting cable there.

As soon as Telecom see work been done to make a better network, they suddenly find a way to do it better, but only in the area of competition. ie cheaper phone lines in the area's that have compition, rolling out new cabnet networks in area's that are been opened to competition and not in area's where there is non.  IHug and Orcon put around $million into that Auckland test exchange, only to be kicked in the guts by Telecoms great new plan, why did they not do it in a better place, to make the network better for the people and not to kick the little teleco's trying to get on there feet.

Teleocm's history is full of these kinds of actions,  I hope the new management can think for the greater good of the people and not just there personal battle with other telco's.   I fear that alot of the planing has been done and set before the new management came to power, and we are seeing legacy evil from the old school mob.  That what I put the Auckland test exchange down to, legacy control.

hellonearthisman: I don't see telecom doing a thing for the public good

And who is?

Fonterra?
Rakon?
Warehouse Group?
Foodstuffs?

These entities are NOT charities, state-owned enterprises or social services.

They, including Telecom are publicly listed companies with an obligation to their shareholders, whilst operating inside the law in New Zealand.

But seeing as we are on the subject, can you tell me how much public good any other ISP does in New Zealand?

Heres a start for Telecom

Business phonelines delivered almost anywhere in Hawkes Bay by a local ISP/telco, NOT using Telecoms network at all, are cheaper than Telecom standard business lines.

Same company also provides better than average downloads (compared to ADSL), and much faster upload capacity than ADSL.

Now thats TRUE competition that ANYONE in this country could choose to invest in, and deliver, without bleating to the government or the comcom, and without asking for regulated access.

I don't think they do anything for the public good though. so they are probably an evil empire in the making Tongue out.

Most of the charity stuff from Telecom was offering discount on there phone services, locking them in a customers.

Maybe I am to much of a socialist Tony for these corporate ideals.
I find it sad to see corporations opting to make a little money as long as they can stop the compition from making any (gives them more market share),  when if they comrads they could both make ever more.
Maybe I am to much of a socialist.

Thats right, it should be all about the greater good, companies run by the state that turn into bumbling beauracracies full of red tape. Your brand of socialism smells horribly like communism. You know that Stalin and Mao both said that what they did was for the greater good? Look how well that turned out..

Most?

I am not sure you even read the information I provided you.

Do you have some figures to back up your claim that most of Telecoms charity involves locking people in somehow with discounted phone services? Because thats a big claim.

People making big claims around here generally get called to back them (I know I have been a few times).

  • Funding a CCS initiative to take their library catalogue online to enable a wide range of people to access resources more readily including disabled people, their families, employers, teachers and many others
  • Supporting IHC's Total Communication programme , which promotes a new inclusive approach to communication for people with an intellectual disability, by funding communications technology resource kits such as laptops, portable printers and digital cameras
  • Helping fund the purchase of several Presbyterian Support mobility vans for use by the elderly, as well as sponsorship of several regional social workers for young people and families
  • Supporting Plunket's Volunteer Education Programme which provides more than 1,000 volunteers with valuable learning opportunities, skills and knowledge each year. Telecom's sponsorship enables Plunket to run this important programme, as well as reimburse volunteers for their child care and travel expenses. Telecom also donated $27,000 raised from the sale of Telecom Pinkilicious post-paid mobiles in late 2006
  • Assisting St John to recruit volunteer ambulance officers to help provide services within the community by supporting volunteer recruitment advertising
  • Supporting the annual IHC Telecom Art Awards , which were established to encourage the creativity and art of New Zealanders with an intellectual disability and to generate public awareness that people with an intellectual disability have unique and important perspectives of the world
  • Sponsoring the Citizens Advice Bureaux's 0800 service which assists the Bureaux to field about 55,000 calls from the public each year

Mobility vans, cash, training, - doesn't sound like too much of 'discounts and lock ins' to me...

Telecoms Charities:
more than 1,000 charities with $5 million in support each year. Regional organisations receive a 10% sponsorship credit across their Telecom services,

I don't any more figures that waht you have provided, but it states they have 1000 charities (not just the half dozen big name charities, like the ones you mentioned.)  that get  10% sponsorship.  I regard that as a token that locks them to the Telecom provider.

The Telecom Art awards, Anyone who enters gives up all copyright and usage right to the works that they enter into the competition.  That not charity that's theft view contract, which I feel is something telecom is very clever at.

They do some good work,  Some of there works look more like a different form of advertising, but only much cheaper than any of telecoms advertisitng campain.

Telecom has 1,900,000 customers, that means each customers share is less than 3c a year,  generous?

As for communism, well it'd no longer the 60's, 70's or 80's so it's it still a bad word?
I don't mind being called a left wing communist it has close ideology to the values of Socialism,
I think it's better then being a right wing capitalist.

You don't have figures so stop accusing a company of being evil just because you don't like it.

Back opinions with facts and some may take you more seriously.

I'm sorry I have the right use the word evil when I am talking about my feeling towards telecom's behaviour.  I have given valid examples of what I see as evil actions.

The infomation I was quoting was from the webpage Tony provided. So there is truth in my interpertaion of those figures.

Other infomation was got from Wikipedia. And through google.

I withdraw my coment about Telecom owning the right to the art, the IHC take's these rights, not telecom.
IHC rules:
All applicants agree to the publication or reproductions of their work by IHC at any time to promote this and future Art Awards for people with an intellectual disability, without payment of any fee, loyalty or commission.
