I am not sure I would believe things stated in that article - there are more than a few inaccuracies.

(and the analysts are clearly not on this planet, based on the quote near the bottom!)

wongtop: Nokia 6085 is Quad band GSM - $150 - no 3G though.

Cheers for that Smile 3G is not necessary for our family.

I just checked on Parallel Imported web site, but the nearest they have is Nokia 6080, but they don't say whether it is Quad Band or not.  I'll check up on it later when I have more time.

According to Nokia's website, the 6080 is Tri-Band.

And while on the topic I'll correct Tom PS who wrote a story in the Dom Post today as well (since he's probably following this thread!). There still seem to be a lot of people who believe Telecom are rolling out a nationwide WCDMA network which is incorrect.

http://stuff.co.nz/4386786a28.html

But the WorldMode phones it now sells are not compatible with its 850MHz W-CDMA network, meaning those devices will not work in New Zealand once Telecom switches off its CDMA network, which it may do any time from 2012.

Telecom are not building a 850MHz WCMDA network. They are rolling out WCDMA @ 2100MHz and GSM @ 850MHz. There 2100MHz WCDMA network is going to cover the major cities while rural areas will be 850 GSM.

I don't think I'd be worried buying a WorldMode phone now and it not working in 4 years time anyway - how many g33ks keep a phone for 4 years? :-)

Telecom are to blame for this as they continue to sell it as WCDMA. Come on it is 850 GSM EDGE with WCDMA in the metros.

Good thing for Telecom going forward is the ability to update to REV B on CDMA to metros and roll out REV A to all sites, this will head off the Vodafone 900mhz roll out, that is sure to be dogged with problems, why - Nokia are building it, but thats my opinion.

I really hope Telecom start marketing the Anydata 630W soon, world mode 900/1800GSM/ EGSM and 2100 HSPA plus CDMA EVDO Rev A 800mhz. This will be the best solution alround for expensive data roaming, with the Nationwide roll out of Rev A (possibly) this would be a great solution for Telecom.

Anyway i cant what to see the first GSM test signal on my 6085, i might upgrade to a decent PDA as well to take advantage of the WCDMA at 2100mhz. Bring it on Telecom.

So...

If someone was to buy a Nokia 6085 which is Quad-Band GSM, but doesn't support WCDMA, could this be used on Telecom's network in major cities?

Or could it only be used in rural areas which have 850MHz GSM coverage?

It seems like this could pose a few problems for those who have GSM phones without 3G Frown

I was of the understanding that it was 850mhz GSM AND 2100mhz WCDMA in the cities.

That’s also my understanding, nationwide GSM EDGE @ 850, with WCDMA in metro areas @ 2100.

Maybe not in the G33K market but allot of regular folk who have bought worldfones over the past two years and some assuming that they would work on the new network  may be pissed as to have buy yet again.  I suspect that there will also be allot of pissed of people who had to buy CDMA fones when Telecom closed the AMPs network who use their fone  as a casual device  will now have to spend again to buy  yet another fone..  Wonder if Telecom will subsidize those casual users who have bought more expensive fones  before the WCDMA/GSM announcemant was made??

OK, that makes a lot more sense.

I'm rather pleased they have gone with EDGE, it's ultra reliable, quick to authenticate and has great battery life.

It's also "just fast" enough for most impromptu browsing so i'll be chomping at the bit to switch my e50 across.
Which reminds me, I need to Debrand it.

Nokia seem to be bringing out more quad band models, Motorola has heaps and others are catching on.

The Palm 750v is already quad band GSM and tri band UMTS including 850MHZ( Next G) By the time launch happens there will be plenty of handsets available either at Vodafone or from other sources, plus maybe just Maybe Telecom are negotiation with Apple to release the IPhone, the american verision is suited with 850MHZ GSM EDGE capabiility so that could be a coup but i am not holding my breath on that one.

From an aussie point of view Quad band GSM and TRI band UMTS is the way to go, more of these are coming out at the mo.

I am really keen to see how much more foot print can Telecom get out of the lower freq, pundits reckon it's certainly better than 900mhz and and very simliar to CDMA 2000 on the same or near Freq..

If I recall correctly, Telecom have the management rights to about 15 MHz of spectrum in the 850 MHz band.

I think I remember seeing somewhere that they are using 3x1.5MHz bands on CDMA for voice and 1x1.5MHz for EVDO at present, meaning approximately 6 MHz in use at present.

I would think it would be really tempting for Telecom to try to limit their GSM spectrum usage to 5 MHz, which when the usage on the CDMA system declines a little, would give them some spectrum to deploy UTMS 850, basically 5MHz each for CDMA, GSM and UTMS.

I don't think the 850 GSM will have a much different footprint than the 900 GSM system, in part due to the fixed 35 km range limit with GSM (ignoring extended GSM).

I imagine some boaties / rural users will stay with CDMA for that reason.

i think this has to be in there thinking. 850mhz WCDMA seems to be picking up momentium and with Vodafone building at 900mhz WCDMA Telecom may end up using the remainder of the spectrum for 850 WCDMA which will possibly be the best option long term.

As much as i hate to say it alot of Telstra roamers reckon the NextG service is great and the data speeds are excellent. Telecom may be waiting to see what happens in NZ, aussie and world wide before committing to a nationawide 850mhz WCDMA network but having 850 mhz GSM with EDGE is a good move short term.
