I tend to just top up by the exact amount I need for my combo ($46) just before it renews. I don't like having extra credit since I find accidental calls and stuff like that can use them up without my realising it. Having a zero balance at all times (apart from just before topping up) means every dollar I top up actually goes to something useful.

Good point about set-up and forget. It would be nice if it was possible for a monthly combo to be automatically renewed directly from a monthly credit card payment rather than having to go through the loops of topping up and then waiting for the renewal to be processed.

Having a zero balance might mean I can't call voicemail.

A simple solution might be to allow both top-up types:

Every 30 days charge a credit card $26 (which would pay for the package)
If the balance hits $1 top up to $5

Though this could be more confusing to some. What's even easier is just billing people what they use, but that's clearly not a pre-pay model, which seems to be what Skinny's concentrating on. That's probably one reason I always thought of them as a budget brand for students and low income people.

My mum is on the $16 combo. I've set it to top up by $16 every time the balance dips below $17. It means there is always a healthy balance there.
