I know there was some problems with another provider I use when one of the ssl flaws was found and the support for the old stuff was disabled. Solution then was tough luck so perhaps the same is happening with this?

Oh this one has been fun one today! I will make it very clear, I am sharing details as someone directly in the know however i am not making an official statement, this is purely my personal input as a community member.

So yes, this is a major issue for a fair amount of customers. I have personally handled a fair amount of the back end followups on all the issues related to this.

the SMX migration is on the way, as part of that Spark have enforced new a higher requirement of security.

This has left some older clients incapable of sending, receiving or in some cases both.

This is both a move that will ensure secure protocols are used for Your email and on sparks side protecting their customers better. We all know how much of a leaky bucket and broken mess yahoo has been.

Being that the SMX move is in full force, it is the best time to make any large modifications like this. I do agree this came rather unexpected, Unfortunately there has been a disconnect between the project managers working on this and the actual faults themselves.

I personally do not take the approach of "Tough luck" because that is not what we are looking at here, Spark are looking at an upgrade to further protect customer privacy and security.

If anyone wants to argue that Outlook Express 6.0 should still be supported, Please try to use IE 6.0 to browse to say, google and tell me how far you get.. Exactly the same situation, only difference is we are talking email rather than internet here.

I will leave this with a slight passage.

Spark takes the security of both our customers and our network seriously. Mail clients that are no longer being updated against modern security threats are not as secure and put yourself and all your contacts at risk. Current mail clients won't put your data at risk just by simply opening an infected email. As a result our security has been upgraded to a higher level which can have an impact on older less secure mail clients like the one you have been using. It's our recommendation that you upgrade your email client and take the necessary steps to protect your data.

.

richms:

Is this just as a result of them dropping support for older ssl types or something higher up in the protocol that old outlook doesnt support that is now needed?

Essentially yes, there has been a change to the SSL.

TLS support is also being phased out to my knowledge based off a few cases however i have not received official confirmation on this, as such it may be haresay.

Some of my elderly clients still running WinXP with Outlook Express and Outlook 2003 have been struck with this problem over the last few days. Spark's website has been very poor in not suggesting specifically what will and won't work.

Under WinXP, I've found Mozilla Thunderbird works well for Xtra email, and strangely Outlook 2010 doesn't. Newer Outlook versions won't even install under WinXP. However Outlook 2010 continues to work fine under Win7 or later.

I can't believe how poorly Spark have handled this, even if there were valid reasons for doing so.

I would ask that you compare the two outlook versions configuration, see if they are exactly the same.

as it stands currently, Outlook express and Microsoft outlook 2010 + mac outlook 2011 are out the door, there may be more that i am not aware of though.

Thunderbird is a very good alternative for older machines.

I did put the request in for the site article to be updated as soon as i was aware that there are some agents directing to the outlook express error code guide, as given these changes it is now incorrect.

I can certainly understand the frustration there, I would say Monday that will likely be all updated though unfortunately as it was not till later in the day i filled that request given other priorities.

Issue took awhile to land in stone as there was a fair bit of backwards and forward between what exactly was up. Clients like outlook 2010 will outright state a SSL error where as Outlook express will fail to send/receive.

Obviously customers using non ssl channels will be unaffected, but then you will not have the portability of using the service behind any other respectable RSP.

Obviously i can't comment on the rest.

mattwnz: Do you mean they have stopped providing customer support for those older versions, or are they blocking people's access?

Essentially both.

Yes you are correct, no one should be using these out of date clients, but it doesn't stop the fact they loads of people are.

They seem to all come out of the woods after hibernation, clients we haven't seen for a decade! :)

We are talking about elderly people who have to learn new software and "re train their life long habits"

Outlooks 2011 isn't that old. Many businesses are still using outlook 2010 on the PC, which is older, but I presume  isn't affected by this. In order to upgrade to the new version , don't people have to move to a subscription, even though they may have spent $500+ on the office software for lifetime ownership. I guess it is a good reason to switch away from extra to a service like gmail which supports it, or to go webbased only. I have helped several elderly people with their computing, and they really do struggle moving to another email system.

I wonder if this is due to the SMX servers. Although my xtra account still seems to be saving emails to yahoos servers, and I can access them via the yahoo app.

You are talking about Office 365, that is a subscription based system, you are able to buy and own office 2016 Home and Business, once of payment and it's yours.

It's easy to say to people to move to Gmail, but it's not as easy and people don't want to go through the hassle especially if it's a business.

yitz: I'm guessing they have done something to try prevent mail clients from downloading 20 years worth of messages.

It's not the clients that are at fault, it's Yahoo's email system that does that.

At this time I would recommend people still running on these to either upgrade to a newer version if possible or to use Mozilla Thunderbird.

If you are on Outlook on Windows you can use an old version of Thunderbird 17.09 to migrate/import the PST over into Thunderbird.

Essentially both.

blocking is a harsh statement, Spark has enforced a higher security requirement. Older services do not support that.

As i said before, you should be able to drop to non ssl methods, but you will be insecure and limited to working only on Spark services in 98% of cases.

i certainly do not recommend this method however.

https://support.google.com/a/answer/176600?hl=en

I like google approach to this, the less secure methods have limitations on them.

as mentioned before, please try to browse to google using IE 6.0 over https you will not get past the SSL auth.

Now i can't think of how many websites out there simply wont support browsers that old... but it only makes sense that the same will happen for other cases.

hassle especially if it's a business.

my Personal opinion to business's here is very grim.

Why expect a free addon service (which the mail is, it comes free with your BB) to preform at the expectations a business requires?

a business Should be concerned about their privacy and security not only for themselves but also their customers.

plus lets be honest, how tacky does an isp provided email look on a business card these days?

For a residential customer, i do feel for it. however being a IT person myself i do support the changes that have happened.

Thunderbird will be using its own cryptographic library while Outlook will be using the Windows Crypto API which for the Windows XP operating system may not support the required cipher strength / type.

This makes sense. However, can we trust Outlook 2010 to continue to operate with Win7 and XTRA mail? I have several clients with this combo, still working well. However, hio77 suggests Outlook 2010 is out...

This is where Thunderbird has hurt me in the past, is not a MAPI client, if you try and send attachment from an out side program like a cash book it will not work.

I think people who say this is OK, fail to see the chain affect.

I.e. A client has XP because the software company won't update his cash book version, so he simply can't replace his setup, the cashbook used MAPI to send clients invoices via email, OE does this fine. His scanner apps won't attach into Thunderbird... The implications for someone like this are large and a very real world situation.
