What is the everything else you have to remove?

1 iPad, 2 Smartphones, 2 photo frames downloading an image every 20 seconds, my wife's laptop etc. It's not a huge network of devices but it certainly has an impact. My point is that the 60-90Mbit/s down is "real world" performance. Connecting directly to the ONT gives the 100/20 as advertised, as does disabling wireless and unplugging everything else from the router.

That's interesting... the exact same configuration. Maybe I'll dig out another Router and rule that out next time I'm renting a movie.

That's interesting... the exact same configuration. Maybe I'll dig out another Router and rule that out next time I'm renting a movie.

I'm using a Mikrotik RB3011, so I doubt changing routers will effect anything.

I believe Bigpipe do have a problem .... but as you say, they just cant seem to track it down

Thanks @mdooher, I guess that rules out the Router component.

I think we're on to something here. BigPipe's DNS servers are giving a different result to OpenDNS, Google, and iHug (an open DNS in New Zealand). BigPipe resolves applimg.com (Apple):

nslookup applimg.com 203.96.123.1
Server: UnKnown
Address: 203.96.123.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: applimg.com
Address: 109.201.135.34

All other DNS servers I tested resolved:

nslookup applimg.com 203.109.129.67
Server: ns1.ihug.co.nz
Address: 203.109.129.67

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: applimg.com
Address: 158.69.143.80

158.69.143.80, the server that all other DNS Servers resolved to appears to be in Canada which gives my ping a 212ms round trip. BigPipe is directing people to 109.201.135.34 which appears to be in the Netherlands with a 334ms round trip.

I'm not sure it's conclusive but it sure is interesting that BigPipe's DNS gives such a different result. I've passed this on to BigPipe support attached to my initial query so hopefully my logic is sound (I'm not a Network Engineer) and we can get to the bottom of this.

Well this is frustrating. I spent some time over the weekend getting some packet captures to try to see what is going on here and why rentals and trailers were slow while purchased movies were fine and... everything worked perfectly.

I've got two theories: 1) the last time I tested using BigPipe's DNS the previous OpenDNS resolution directing to a distant CDN endpoint was still cached somewhere or 2) BigPipe have made changes. I hope it's the second one and things continue to work correctly for me. Has anyone else with this issue noticed a difference in the last week?

Nope I'm still having the same problems.

I watched a movie on Saturday evening and got the dreaded "This movie will be ready in 2 hours" in reality it took about 10 minutes.

A few days ago I was trying to watch one and I had to give up and watch it the next night. I just watched Netflix instead (on the same apple TV) with no problems.
