I'll tell you now. With no third party firmware support you're just trying to get an underpowered lemon to work (and sorry to break it to you - you won't get full speed with it).

Your options are to use a router from my guide or use the Huawei - the "crap" excuse you've given for your Huawei is simply not true as they're pretty darn good routers.

Your current router is simply underpowered.

A quick search online shows testing of that router not being capable of delivering 1Gbps/1Gbps WAN to LAN routing performance. At the end of the day like many routers out there it's not capable of delivering the level of performance you're expecting from it.

Price is not a measure of router performance, and if you don't want to use the Huawei you'd be best to go any buy a new router that will meet your requirements and expectations.

michaelmurfy - no need to be like that. If what I have said offends you I suggest you go away.

sbiddle - you may be right, but what I read suggested it can handle gigabit connections and it did so, for a while at least. Asus have suggested a config change but that did not work. They have escalated and will get back in the next few days. The good news is apparently it holds a 3 year warranty which means I can RMA it potentially. Or try to get it replaced with a better brand eh.

Look guys - I come on here to ask about a specific problem. And you digress! I appreciate that the Huawei is an option - not for the best for me, and me spending what little time I have explaining my reasons to a group of people who have a different opinion is not fixing my immediate problem.

I am here to ask for help, not have a debate about the good or bad qualities of a spark router.

If want to go and debate the Hauwei router go to the Huawei router forum page, I am sure there are plenty, but don't turn a request for help into a chance to rant.

Think your missing the point others are trying to make regarding the hg659b.

Their argument is simply, you have not presented why you don't wish to the use the hg659b, Maybe you have a totally valid argument for it which would cease the backwards and forward.

Onto comments on the Asus however;

It is great to hear you are working with Asus, if anyone is able to improve things it will be them.

However; the issue you presented is WAN -> LAN throughput issues of which that particular device is a bit under powered to pull off for a PPPoE VLAN tagged traffic at load.

More than likely at low connection counts, It was just managing to pull this off. However now that you may have started up using the connection more the load has gotten a little excessive for the built in CPU.

Likely LAN to LAN it would produce Gbit throughput with ease.

You could bridge the HG659b to your ASUS, but that would be rather redundant and excessive considering terminating the connection on your router would be best in terms of points of failure.

On a note of any router at all for gbit connections, you really do require hardware offset or an insanely powerful amount of cpu to handle the load.

often many routers work great for untagged situations, but not tagged traffic (spark will not turn tagging off on your port)

Nah I am not missing their point - I have had enough of them state it after all. But it is not the first time this frustrating digression has happened - previous post of mine asking about why my router was slowing down ended up another unhelpful diatribe discussing the pros and cons of a gigabit connection - with many asking why I need it in the first place.

Often it seems like there are a heap of uber geeks just waiting to pounce in a not-so-helpful manner - maybe geekzone is what it says on the box "a zone for geeks" and not a place to come and seek expert advice after all - I am not sure.

I hear (spelled correctly correctly this time) what you say hio77 - will see what asus come back with and then decide whether to go for my free crappy huawei or go and buy a really overpriced and underpowered Asus.

@kapitikarl you've got to remember there are people around here (including myself) with a tonne of experience on broadband, routers etc. I'm sorry you felt that way about my post but I was only pointing out that your current router won't achieve full speed.

It is new router time for you I'm afraid. Many people have told you that your current router won't achieve full speed. There isn't anything more to it.

Furthermore you've asked for help and we've answered your questions. I'm sorry it isn't what you want to hear but people on here tell it for what it is - we try not to make things up.

If you're simply wanting better wifi then maybe using both routers may be an option (using the HG659 for routing and putting the asus into AP mode by turning off DHCP and connecting it via the lan port to the Huawei).

I have asked for help. Some answered the question I asked which was great and I am thankful. Some digressed and some described my choice not to digress with them as a crap excuse, some picked on my spelling even though I said I did not have much time to fully respond. That is not helpful. That is insulting and oppressive. I am unsubscribing from this now. Thanks again to all those who responded.

@kapitikarl instead of spending time refuting peoples replies you could have spent that time explaining what features you need that the Huawei doesn't offer or what features that the ASUS has that you want to keep. the bonus of doing this is that based on this people could also have given you a recommendation on what router would do what you want/need.

I am surprised I am still getting notifications but yes I will be adding - hopefully - a detailed entry into the forum about anything that happens from my call to Asus in case anyone else should face this issue.
