Likely it won't be ideal for this particular usecase OR it would be used to offset users closer to the tower to allow those further to have service via existing 4G.

It's much like Band 40/7. It makes very little improvement in a rural area, but when layered It acts as an offload.

the other side of this is, remember many "RBI" areas can be simply small rural towns, For these again this could be effective.

Sure the argument could be made in those cases Fibre should be ran but think about how much effort that is for folk?

Just imagine what would happen with a theoretical multi-gigabit connection :P

If it downloads Twitter images faster than 2degrees...

C-Band maybe? with enough power you might get it a fair distance. The 27Ghz wouldn't get far though...

Yay more of the spectrum to have to engineer around. It will be interesting to see what headend outputs dBW wise too....

Summary
5G, the next generation cellular mobile technology, is expected to increase mobile connectivity and support new services and as yet unimagined innovations. It will be central to future economic growth, employment, education, transport and more. It is anticipated to facilitate transformative change for New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses.
Radio Spectrum Management has prepared a consultation document addressing the possible 5G spectrum bands and their future allocation. It also asks for feedback on any other barriers to the roll out of 5G in New Zealand.
Interested parties are invited to comment on the questions raised by the consultation document and other matters related 5G in New Zealand.

I am really interested to see where they end up taking this with regard to fixed wireless broadband. I still believe that larger households will always need a fibre connection, but as a light user who doesn't have access to fibre this could be quite an exciting development for me.

I can see new developments like Pokeno getting a backend 10GB/S (or higher) link and then a PowerTower serving 5G for the ones who can’t/won’t install the fibre, or even spark undercutting the fibre price (like Skinny BB vs ADSL) so they don’t have to pay subs to Chorus for every connection too...?

Can especially see this working in places like retirement villages where total throughput is very low, but ‘instant’ speeds fully appreciated by the newly retiring FB Grannies 😂

Hey guys

I was one of the techs that installed this equipment in the exchange. We pre tested it all before we drove it to wellington in our warehouse in Mt Wellington. Working with the Huawei engineers and Sparks RF team for a few days.
In our warehouse we were cracking 16Gbps!

By the time all these self driving cars, IoT powered Cyber-cows and precision delivery fertilizer drones have arrived they'll need to string fibre cables to every power pole in the country with a mmWave repeater at 1km intervals!

Personally, I'd be quite happy with 100Mbps fixed mobile broadband with unlimited data at a sensible price approximately 3km away from an existing RBI tower across level terrain (but with some trees in the way).

Fingers crossed, eh?

Another approach

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT: thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D: two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

Better spend money on extending 4G coverage and increase data caps.
