Xt1ncT: Well it seems that a few people here may be wrong - either that or the Telecom guy is wrong.
I've given them the simcard and ordered an OKta Boss, and when the Telecom dude completes the online form apparently it's saying they need a number from a Vodafone handset - which I don't have.

freitasm:That's what I thought, and he's still trying to do it now - hopefully they get it right as I really don't want to lose that number!!Xt1ncT: Well it seems that a few people here may be wrong - either that or the Telecom guy is wrong.

They don't need a Vodafone handset or a number. They only need the SIM card for positive identification and for the $300 credit in your account.
Telecom still don't get it right. The same when I asked for a Telecom SIM card to use in one my (many) unlocked GSM handsets while overseas. They wanted to know what number was on that phone. It doesn't matter, it's GSM, there's no SIM card on the handset so there's no number. And they don't need to know the IMEI for anything really.
