Which is exactly what the NSA got caught doing with Dell and Cisco gear in the snowden documents before it was exported internationally. Why no one bats an eyelid at their actions I don't know.

I'm happy to use Huawei (or other Chinese brands of) devices on a personal level, because I simply don't care if the PLA sees my porn browsing, but if my manager ever told me we were putting in Huawei switches or servers I'd question his sanity and probably start looking for a new job. Genuinely do not think the government should permit any of the NZ Telco's to use Chinese equipment for national infrastructure, why even risk the possibility of something untoward?

The bigger picture here is that even control of a consumer-class device such as the one you probably own, can be extremely useful. For example, your device could be enrolled in a DDoS attack against a foreign power, it could be used to actively hack a company or government organisation, or to spread malware to numerous targets.

Should Huawei be the only target? Given the reliance on foreign countries for in the supply chain, should we question any brand of equipment that isn't wholly constructed from local components using trusted supply chains? Is that even possible right now? Probably not.

I for one would much rather the US/Five Eyes spying on me than the Chinese government.

A governments foremost job is to protect its citizens.

China is competing aggressively for the worlds finite resources. The are building whole islands in the south china seas, to claim territory. There is a war being fought as we speak.

China is still a communist country and has almost absolute control over chinese companies and information flow.

I wonder sometimes as to why the USA ceded much of its manufacturing capacity to China.

While I get that many kiwis are friendly to the chinese government , they forget the human rights abuses that occur in China and the little value they put on the rights of politically unimportant citizens.

Personally, I prefer to trust the USA over China. US society values human rights, china does not.

Pretty much, We give the USA leeway as they are an ally and we are part of five-eyes, China is not
