Its also slow in other ways choking on wifi throughput. Even vodafone agrees

The "Modem" is given away free on a Spark Business connection, you are totally at liberty to provide whatever device you see fit for your clients needs.

As for me, I typically provide Mikrotik's, they are one of the most flexible and programmable and cost effective devices, and provide excellent throughputs, never had issues with Hex S or RB4011's on Gig connections.

I never denied it was free or im not able to use others.

As per previous posts ... my preference is router os devices eg microtek.

But isps refuse help if you dont use the provided modem.

The thread is why use or not use the huawei. Ive posted that you keep using to improve isp responsiveness but that responsiveness is generally limited to ... is the connection up or down. Ive also posted we have multiple experiences of the modem being unresponsive on web interface and almost impossible to configure owing to that issue.
It also has less functional wireless than others.

Do what you want... but good luck getting any response from an isp with microtek gear.

The choice is about business risk. Better routers or improved isp support

To be honest I have never had issues with ISP support whilst using other routers than supplied, maybe I dont have a lot of issues, infact I can hardly remember any recent issues other than full loss of service that was way larger than my lot.

Which begs the question, what type of typical or repeat issues are you having that starts this conversation.

To suggest it's slow IMHO is a bit like invoking Godwin's law in a debate - you immediately lose the debate.

The HG659b is not a router for a many business deployments, and yes it's not perfect.. But to suggest it's slow is complete and utter rubbish. It'll still beat many off the shelf routers hands down in terms of routing performance, and more importantly can happily sustain very high throughput figures with incredibly high PPS rates that would see many other routers that may be capable of routing Gigabit actually choke.

Last week. No adsl on client. Foul up at exchange
Week before and several times in last 2 months. No dsl. Cable cut on road and now something fouled up in exchange.
Last week. Dsl issue. 86mbps upload and 43mbps download dsl signal with less than 50% uptake by hg659 router. Intermittent fails.
Last four weeks..dealing with 3g/4g internet connection issues.
2 weeks ago. Cant get port fowards done as hg659 failed to respond on web interface and when it did failed to show devices or allow adding devices. Not the first time this seen on hg routers.
This week. Isp killed wrong connection and lost fixed ip. Client had 3 connections and wong one stopped as isp records wrong about ip addresses.
Three weeks ago.isp claims complete outage and wouldnt believe router showing dsl signal but no ip. Got ip then isp claims we have complete outage and wont believe ip is up and down. Exchange issue.

The list goes on. Im called in to sort the type of crap juniors cant solve as ive got 30 plus years experience. Spent yesterday debugging issues on a 900k laser cutter with embedded winxp.
Week before serial connections on turret punch.

I specialise in difficult internet connections in the country. Used to indtall wireless 2.4 long distance connections and woosh post quake and rbi.

I spend hours dealing with bad isp support and hate the routers spark and vf use for their dysfunctional interfaces and slow response (cpu or other issues with bad web interface)

My stack at home includes mikrotik and ubiqiti. Try getting an isp to support that is a no go. Thankfully it doesnt go wrong...but when a tech cuts fibre in box across street took 3 days to get isp to pull finger and fix it. The tech bent cables.

You have both failed to read how I think it is slow - again - the web interface is patchy, unresponsive and fails to perform tasks submitted to it on a regular basis. I'm not the only one failing to get things working in it - and Huawei have acknowledged difficulties in some of the functionality.

The topic here is not climb on top of shane and pee on his posts. The topic is why you would or wouldn't keep using the Huawei router. I gave my opinion - you keep it to get better support from ISP's , you dump them because they are under whelming in their functionality and performance. Performance is more than how fast they can push data - but if you want to use that as a metric - replacing the huawei in one client last week improved speeds by over 30%.

I have another client where with 86mbps theoretical download at DSL level, I'm getting 37-42mbps actual. And that's in chch near the aeroport, not in the middle of the country.
