I thought in areas where fibre is not being rolled out there was no push to get people off copper? (Glinks Gully included - sounds like their only connection there).

This would not be offered in areas where copper is the only option.

there is always possibility for some sort of error, but to my knowledge, there has been some very careful selections for this offering.

As a note on the UPS, it's only really suited for the job its sent out for, its a simple DC UPS.

DC UPS is very sensible. How long does that last in the best case?

to be totally honest, i have not gone to the effort of getting one in my hands.

up to 4 hours runtime is expected.

In the interest of geekzone... i'll go speak to the team heading up this...

A friend also received this letter and declined the offer. He suggested to Spark to give him a decent reduction in line rental per month as they would not have to pay Chorus for the copper line. Of course Spark declined to reduce the price.

the wireless service is being offered at a reduced price compared to a copper landline...

Yes a $5 per month reduction. What do Spark pay Chorus per month wholesale for a copper connection.

- There's a UPS included (free)

- Modem is free

- Two free phone handsets included in the offer

- Better price than current copper lines. (Most customers will see a $5-$10 per month saving)

Oddly, the economics of this may not be as incredibly straightforward as you would like to think.

It's no secret that in this incredibly competitive market that companies are all trying to maximise profit (again, strangely, it's not only Spark!), but that only ultimately happens if we provide a decent service and good support at a reasonable price. While I know many people would prefer a fixed connection of some sort, even for their voice line, it's not possible to reasonably argue with the amazingly straightforward provisioning process of our Fixed Wireless (and Fixed Wireless Voice) products. This also translates into a single company having end to end view of the service which makes assure at least more deterministic,  and frequently faster.

In any case, that's the last thing I am going to say on the pricing. I know that there are many here that will go to their grave 100% certain that Spark can never do anything good - why bother trying to change those minds?

Cheers - N

remember ontop of spark paying chorus for the copper, Spark also own the neax's etc.

There is a considerable amount of cost in power alone that go into those things.. (yes they are being replaced with CCN but that's a whole different discussion)

Your also not considering wire maintenance, which many of these customers do have.

The way i see it, particularly for many of the customers who are getting it, this is a simple solution to have a painless copper experience.

The average copper line has a fault on it Just over once a year. That's just reported faults aggregated out, there are far worse lines that have tens of faults a year!

Or worse yet, the customer always has a noisy landline that they just put up with - how often have you heard someone say, oh that's just normal for my phone..

I know that isnt everyone's experience with copper landlines, there is a handful of customers who have never experienced a fault and they have perfect copper etc..

Lets reduce the overhead even more by letting Skinny retail the same product.

Also, as a bonus I believe you get 5gb of mobile broadband on this which is very handy for me as I bought my Nana a Nixplay photo frame (https://www.nixplay.com/) allowing us family members to upload photos to it from anywhere (otherwise, she has no need for internet).

How certain are you about the data being included? If it is the case then I will flick my MIL over to 4G landline and also get a nix display as thats a great idea!!

Thanks, saw a way of convincing the MIL to change, she doesnt want a bar of it but photos from the grandkids would have been a clincher. Might look into burglaring MichaelMurfys Nana then.
