Is it something an electrician would do? Am I better off trenching some conduit all the way?
I'll need to do something regardless because of fibre coming in 2022 so I might as well do it right once, it's just I don't know the right avenue or approach so any advice is welcome.

As a quick test, if you have jackpoints in the garage, have a look at how the modem syncs in there.

I mean, sure I could wait but I can't really justify doing nothing when something could be done. I have the time and resources to improve my situation and I'm willing to pursue that.
One or two devices (at most) can stream Netflix/YT OK @1080p with a 10Mbps connection. What's your WiFi like?
MidnightRider:Easy way to find out is measure the line stats at the ETP. Take the lead in splice it to an RJ11 then plug that into your router.
Yeah, my surrounding neighbours range between 14mbps and 20mbps so I'm somewhat confident that its possible and even a jump to 14mbps is a huge improvement from the 8mbps I'm currently sitting at.
I'm pretty sure it is internal wiring and that was why I was pushing to get a technician out to look at it because while I'm handy enough, the scale of this is a little overwhelming.

The red x is where my pc/modem etc is and is the main house, the red line is where the line enters from the road, goes through the workshop and then disappears into the ground. Unfortunately its out of my grasp haha.
a Fault of some sort has been resolved. Your physical attenuation has dropped by an order of magnitude.
Have you possibly changed a phone, a filter or something lately?
Does a tech happen to be working down the road? possibly switched the pairs... could be a multiple on yours, i forget off the top of my head...

Nothing has changed on my end. It's a naked connection so no phones/filters.

I'm not really too sure how to proceed from here. My connection can obviously connect at double the speed I'm getting sometimes, so I'm sure its possible to get it reliably.
So why do you have VDSL on a line that isn't suitable??

Would Chorus of even installed VDSL if they didn't think it was capable?
On the broadband maps I fall within the VDSL territory, and a lot of surrounding neighbours have it also.

It hasn't been suggested that I change to ADSL, it that something I should bring up?
Attenuation is indicating a cable run of 2.5 km or so. What do you think the real distance to cabinet is??

If google maps is to believed and the location of the exchange from gis.geek.nz is correct then its a 1.4km walk from my house.
Way outside usable service as cable run will be longer. Chorus info is sometimes incorrect. I'm 1.6 km from exchange with 33 dB attenuation (cable run around 2 km). Chorus claimed that VDSL was available to house next door, they showed as 5 Mbps on ADSL. I have a master splitter so was on 12/1. Nonsense to even try VDSL. Street on GPON now.
