Telecom needs to get rid of the POS go lag plan, I was on it for over a year and got such slow download speeds it wasnt worht the 'unlimited' data, I switched to the adventure 10gb plan which has done me well but i am looking forward to uncapped speeds and a 20gb cap

Slow speeds? i get around 200kbs off rapidshare and other such services with unlimited data.. Torrents run at a slow 30-50kbs but that is throttled and expected. Im not the only one that won't be impressed if they move us off go-large.. My usage can go over 100gb a month easy so the plan suits me fine.

I wish I'd joined it when it came out (and stuck with it)

Most of the people on it now wouldn't leave if you paid them to (since any other plan would cost them way more)

When i was on go lag i got 10-20kbps and that was with all the port forwarding etc. now that I am on adventure i get anywhere from 10-300kpbs, I can see why you would want to hang on to go large if you actually get good speeds....

I'm on the go large but would really like my uploading speed to increase like stated earlier... "...meaning all Telecom plans priced $49 and above are now uncapped* in both upload and download speed..."
Anyone else have an opinion on that? So far I haven't seen any change in bitrate on my upload. I'm still not influenced to change to one of the normal plans even with the new data allowances. If there was something at the same price (about $50 a month) that have roughly 50GB data allowance with the uncapped up and down then I would totally switch over but for now I'm pulling down way too much data to downgrade myself... It's possible they don't know who does what online... It kindof doesn't seem ethical to allow us more data allowance because of torrenting etc but that is just what we are all doing, right?! All in all they are moving in the right direction but they are still far behind...

That quote didn't mean all existing customers on existing plans will get a upload increase - they apply to the upcoming plans.

If you watched the news last night you would have seen the segment on the new copyright law coming into effect in a few months. The gouverment wants our isp's to pull the plug on anyone doing illegal downloads, from what ive read and from that segment things arn't looking too good for your average downloader.. Sure it will take a while to come into force and i dont quite know how they are going to police it (theres bound to be ways around it you would think anyway) but for you average person there data cap requirements are probably about to drop quite significantly if they are threatend with disconnection for continuing downloading pirated materials..

You read it right, that has always been the overage charges for Telecom.
However, you should only really be paying overage on a regular basis if you are on the wrong plan (in which case you should change) of if you are currently on Ultra and using more than 50GB.

If that is the case, you can go on the advanced business plan, which is $40 cheaper than Ultra, gives you 60GB of usage and overage is only $3/GB

No-one will be worse off under the new changes, and high users will be much, much better off.

Wow, its a crap government website (suprise suprise) where a Bill that has been given assent is no longer viewable but it hasn't been ammended to the main Act yet. Luckily there is good old Lexisnexis legal database.

92A of the updated Act is worrying as it does not give any indication that the ISP must have knowledge of the offending when it must act. However 92C(2)(i) "knows or has reason to believe that the material infringes copyright in the work;" shows that, in the case of stored material the ISP should have actual or constructive knowledge of the material. Personally I can see judges reading 92A under the same light, that an ISP must either be actually aware (perhaps by notification of the copyright holder/agent) or some other means.

However the court could say that someone doing 100GB/month in usage should assume there could be something up, so it will be interesting to see what kind of test there is for constructive knowledge. But I personally can't see the courts cracking down on ISPs and demanding unreasonable levels of monitoring.

The higher courts, which is where early cases would eventually end up, are more likely to take a reasonable approach to ISP obligations. Or we can hope that any such early cases happen in Manukau and appear before Judge Harvey at the DC there, as he knows IT better than most IT professionals I've met (or at least people who call themselves IT professionals).
