NealR: @JoeBlogs, not sure where you got our stats from. When I look, the success rate is greater than 99.7% (>1/300), not 97% (1/30) as you describe. The majority of these failures are because of invalid numbers.

Neal

47.3% of all statistics are made up on the fly.

Indeed Smile

The figure I give is off the cuff from an engineer and is nothing to do with users sending the message to the wrong number. Also note the figure is when any form of queue is activated on the text message rather than it being sent immediately (this could last 5 seconds or an entire day). Unless of course you maintain part of VF's infrastructure... ?

@Joeblogs. I suggest you get your engineer friend to give me a call so we can compare sources of statistics. Your friend can find me in the Telecom Internal phone directory under Principal Architect Wireless.

JoeBloggs: I've heard of this happening many times. The good news is that generally this will happen less than 1 in 30 texts to the opposite network - and yes, it happens in both directions. When one mainframe is busy processing their own needs [texts], outside requests get queued last. There are no plans to "fix" this as it isn't technically an issue. The closest I've come to seeing this blown out is when an emergency text was sent between networks and wasn't received until the following day. Normally it's simply a nuisance.

As a telecom customer, next time it takes 7 hours for message to come through what number do I ring to complain to vodafone about it, and 2) will they try and charge me a $1 for phone call, one of the many reasons I have nothing to do with vodafone!

The day every message took 7 hours that was individually, i.e message sent 3.30pm arrived 10.30pm, message sent 4.30pm arrived 11.30pm - phone on whole time.

Last time it happened was on 26/9. One message only, others ok. Person sending doesn't appear moviated to do anything about it, but if I was the sender I'd be asking for my 20 cents back as the message is worthless taking that amount of time to arrive.

  1. When I contacted Telecom about this "issue" 5 years ago, the response that I got from the CSR was "we cannot guarantee that SMS's (either 027->021, or 027->027) will be delivered instantly. If your message is urgent, make a phone call."

Seems pretty reasonable to me... =)
