There is a lot of confusion that exists over "copper shutdown" because there are two very different issues at play here - the decommissioning of the NEAX's, and the decommissioning of copper. They are not both one and the same.

In rural areas copper will still be around for many years to come. People will receive their copper based xDSL broadband over it, and they will also receive their voice services over it BUT this voice will be delivered from the exchange or cabinet using an ISAM-V card. It will not be delivered from a NEAX.

I haven't seen any recent figures showing how many customers are now on ISAM-V cards but there are already a lot of rural and small town Spark customers who have a "copper landline" that are now on ISAM-V cards and do not get their voice services from a NEAX. I'd pick probably 99% of these people would be totally unaware of this.

In urban areas where UFB is deployed a time is going to come where copper will be decommissioned meaning there will be no xDSL based services available, nor will there be the ability to receive voice services over copper via NEAX or from an ISAM-V card. This will still be some years away however, and the NEAX decommissioning is going to happen before that happens meaning that any customers in urban areas who want to keep copper based voice are going to end up on ISAM-V if their RSP supports this, or being forced to move to UFB or FWA for voice.

Correct and it looks like Spark are withdrawing their copper offer in Devonport and Miramar in line with the NEAX shutdowns in those areas, other providers will still offer this until Chorus makes the decision to withdraw copper in those areas (which might get accerated with the Spark customers gone)

I would love to see these figures too, how many NEAXs have gone to date, and how many ISAM-V lines there are - I also want to know the plan for extreme rural where customers have PCM repeaters between the NEAX and their Premises

NOWNZ is the only other provider I know who is heavily invested in ISAM-V

No cabinets will remain until chorus withdraws copper other RSPs will still have connections at this stage

For that to happen the 111 code and copper withdrawal codes must be in place

Isn't Miramar now just an extension of Courtenay Place?

I used to be on the 61k at Miramar then got migrated to the RLU. I thought the k had been shut down ages ago.

With a quick API check I can confirm MIR4 is still an active NEAX Switch

Another BS article by journalists that have no clue.... Grey Power going on about isolated New Zealand who will still have a copper landline because in “isolated” NZ there is no fibre.

Those 1000 customers in devonport and miramar can still get copper lines by switching to another provider who does ISAM-V if they want.
But that is temporary until Chorus shutdown copper and as said in a previous post with the Spark customers migrated to FWA or Fibre Chorus may accelerate the copper Shutdown in those areas

The only truth in that article is really that the 111 code must be in place before Copper can be shut off

FYI those NEAXs on that news segment look well maintained compared to others I've seen with missing doors and panels

What happens if chorus still have the copper available, but no telcos are retailing PSTN service over it before the 111 code is finished? Surely they cant force a telco to sell a service so when they all decide the costs of copper are not worth it and stop selling it, why should chorus still have it

Any telco would have to be staffed by idiots to want to take on a copper voice customer in these areas onto their own equipment.

You don't have your own equipment, you give chorus a SIP details and the same piece of equipment already in place that provides DSL for your customer registers so your SIP server and provides dial tone

This is already in place in most areas and until Chorus get the go ahead after the 111 code is in place to switch off copper

nztim: Good old NEAX days are numbered now, switch by switch they are getting shut down..... good news for 61K connected customers who have not had any Caller ID or other smartphone services which should become standard with this move

The additional charge for caller id really irritates. It would be nice if it was 'standard' ; ).
