Why should they support a device you didn't purchase from them?

@Linkzor No carrier is going to support you with a imported handset

Spark's website seem to hint that they would offer some level of phone and in store support with regards to connecting a non Spark sourced device onto their 5G network. Based on the information that they have provided regarding frequency bands, my Pixel 5 shouldn't have any issues on their 5G network. No mention whether VoLTE is required to access 5G or whether I was being given wrong info by the rep on the phone.

Disappointed with the hands off approach from Spark to be honest. If they do not provide any support whatsoever for non Spark devices then they should make it a lot clearer.

Spark customer care needs some work and additional training: sometimes get hanged up on, wait 2hrs on the phone and they still can’t do things so just end up going to shop where there is sometimes a very experienced worker there who can help.

This is likely what happened with the release of LTE, first it was certified devices only then everything else got it. It might be a couple of years before non-certified devices get 5G. Eventually they will have to enable it as in a few years 5G will be standard.

They did their bit and "turned 5G on" for your connection. That is not the same as making it work on your phone.

This happened for me... on the computer screen at the Spark Store 5G had a tick next to it...

gajan: Unfortunately we don’t officially support that device, and hence google hasn’t enabled it (it won’t be tested etc)...

Who does the testing and how do they test it?

I think what happens is to start with 5g will only work for certified and activated devices. This is what happened with 4G I think. Eventually, it will be enabled.

My non-spark certified imported phone is using the same X52 modem built-in in 765G as your pixel 5. So hardware side you should be able to get 5G like my device do. If you have dual sim try to remove one of them since 5G does not work on dual sim. And make sure your area does have 5G signal since it is very limited.

My preferred network type is set to "NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA" but I don't think this matters.

Just because you have the hardware doesn't mean the software is there too.

The software does support NR, however not in NZ, the carrier will have to enable it for all NR compatible devices

Which will only happen on certified devices by the carrier.

Almost pointless debating this since it's been stated here https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=277414&page_no=4#2612744 and in this thread too that if the handset isn't from Spark it's not going to be supported your mileage will vary if it works it works if it doesn't it doesn't.

It's a miracle my own imported handset (Oneplus 8) does both but only after rooting and changing LTE profiles(software!) on the handset to get VoLTE and 5G working. You maybe able to root and do the same but dragons ahead and you may brick your handset and void your warranty or have a phone that straight up won't connect to Spark or any other carrier.

Hi Linkzor, how'd you get on with your Pixel 5 5G? I'm in the same scenario as you.

All the comments in this thread make sense so I suspect no support or time will need to pass before support is provided.

I have been told by Spark to enable 5G I need a sim which supports 5G. I can't find info on the Spark website which confirms this, so uncertain. But I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

Similarly for me I don't have the option for:

- VoLTE

- Advanced CAlling

- 4G Calling

In the expected Settings location, but searching Settings for "VoLTE" displays the three results above and tapping on any of the search results brings me to the page on the Pixel 5 5G I'd expect it to exist, but they don't. So I suspect a device/software side restriction.

Cheers

Ash.
