I've managed to locate a ubiquiti edgerouter. If I tag the WAN port to VLAN10 will that work or does it really need to be a spark branded device?
Edgerouter should be fine, you'll just need the appropriate settings. I'm pretty sure there is a thread somewhere with the relevant details.

I've had free replacements arranged for clients, either with a postage fee or a reference to take to a Spark store to collect... You can expect a contract period, though, in the case of routers being out of warranty
You can buy an HG659b for around $10 on TM
Yep, they are cheap on TM. I bought a Vodafone one to use as an AP for a whopping $1.50!
