Telecom are not going GSM.

The simple over simplified answer why Telecom never deployed GSM in the past? Over the years when Telecom have made their technology choices they have never had spectrum capable of deploying GSM on with the exception of 1800. There is no bad decision by Telecom.

Edit: inserting the word never in my sentence above makes a little more sence!

Interesting point, because I was at Telecom when they were making that decision and had the pleasure of going to an Ericcson demo of w-CDMA out at their site Mt Wellington way. Bloody awesome demo, amazing performance and Mohan Jesudason (sp?) decided that it wasn't the way to go....nothing to do with Lucent flying him the the States to show him how great CDMA was..... So the question is, if he had made teh decision to go w-CDMA back then would there be this huge amount of "mines bigger than yours" crap occuring at the moment?? They did have the option back then and said no...pretty much everyone i was working with could not understand why...

At that point i remember our Ericsson rep saying wcdma would be the way to go in the future, he was in the end right!..... BUT it would have cost 10 x what CDMA cost to build at 2100mhz which was the only freq available at the time or up coming and Telecom could only get 1800mhz freq in GSM.

CDMA has served Telecom well, Like Telstra they are converting at WCDMA at the premier frequency of 850 at a time when the technology is starting go ballistic, both have been CDMA operators, the only difference was Telstra had a GSM network.

I do get sick of the anti CDMA sentiment, the reality is had CDMA 2000 been a viable option in Europe it would have ruled the world and it would the the network of choice. WCDMA come out of the need to move from the TDMA limitations, CDMA 2000 could have well and truly been that network.

By the way Mohan Jesudason was liability who cost Telecom Billions! like so many of his counter parts and the CEO. Shame Paul Reynolds and the new management were not around then.

Telecom going WCDMA in 2001 would have been up there with Telecom buying AAPT and Air NZ buying Ansett. It would have been a lame duck that tasted like lemon and would have lost them the mobile war overnight.

Reastically I'd say ~2005 was the turning point where WCDMA networks and handsets became viable alternatives to GSM. Look at all of those butt ugly NEC WCDMA handsets that were the size of bricks back in 2001.

Telecom's biggest flaw was not being able to deploy GSM in the early/mid 90's. Had the American interested not decided to give up the ETACS spectrum in return for the AMPS B band spectrum then things may have been different. Decions made back in ~1991 had a big influence in the way Telecom mobile coule evolve.

Anybody know where Mohan is these days? I heard him speaking one day and cou;ldn't believe how somebody who knew so little could be head of Mobile..

It appears to only be some attack on Telecom designed to look like a legitimate television program, Shockingly innacurate and stupid IMO. The original "Telecom spoof" with the obviously English childrens accents at least was funny.

1987 - Telecom did not go with GSM as it did not exist, Bellsouth NZ in 1992 was a very very early implementation, Telecom originally owned the 900MHz spectrum (ETACS back then) but the government made them gave up the entire GSM compatible bandwidth (not just a portion, quite a rare situation)
2000 - Telecom had little choice to go with CDMA as it was the "upgrade" path for AMPS/DAMPS at the tme and cheap to deploy, CDMA really has done us pretty well for what it was.
2004 - t3G aka EVDO high speed data overlay was introduced as it was much more cost-effective (remember the customer have to pay for these fancy networks in the long run) to deploy than a whole new network (UMTS) which at the time was in it's infancy.
2007 - Telecom is skipping the old 2G GSM altogether and going with a high coverage footprint UMTS (GSM evolution path) at 850MHz as now such a network is avialable in the 850MHz spectrum range, it wasn't even off the concept stage in 2000.

Anyone who has ever used EVDO data worldwide will swear by how fast and stable it is and it offers impressive coverage.

nah, I doubt it.

it went around Telecom's legal team weeks ago. I know because one of them forwarded it to me saying it was pretty funny.

Telecom originally owned AMPS A band. Ministry of Commerce sold licences for 3 x ETACS bands with the belief they would be used for the new upcoming GSM networks. These were purchased by Telecom NZ, Telecom Australia and BellSouth. Telecom NZ also purchased the AMPS B band and were told they had to give up ETACS or AMPS B - quite a stupid move really and the belief was they would give up the AMPS B spectrum. Turned out the Americans had no faith in GSM and decided that they wanted the both AMPS bands so Telecom gave up their ETACS spectrum in return for both AMPS bands.

Hmm, glad I saved it then, I checked a few other Youtube bookmarks and it looks like Youtube are on a deleting spree as the videos were active last week, even an "8bit midi" rendition of Chamillionaire was pulled... stupid, probably contained "a likeness" to the original artist! :-P
