Talkiet:

I get that it's top of YOUR list, but correct top of the list if you want to troubleshoot a potential issue with the service is to put in a known good router... But you know that :-)

Cheers - N

In theory yes I do know that. In practice I do have a tendency to skip some of the first steps if they think they're a waste of time.

Talkiet:

I feel the need to point out that this makes you the unbelievably, ridiculously small exception - 4 standard deviations away from normality... It's figuratively never the ISP or the LFC.

Now of course those rare events do happen, but it's insanely rare.

It's probably because I have generally exhausted everything on my end before engaging with the ISP

BUT... that being said in this case it actually was my router. HW offloading was disabled. I've no idea how long it's been like that, and I'm surprised I hadn't notice earlier. Valuable lesson for me though that sometimes I need to check more and assume less.

I question whether the helpdesk would have suggested that as a possible solution though, so posting here still probably got me the fastest resolution.

Now I just need to see if the wifi is performing well (which I can't test until tonight). If not then I'll need to start another thread about that!

Thanks

Linux:

Fair point I half read the post, I take that back

Try the ISP provided hardware

Fair enough, I do it too - but only get annoyed when others do it to me :)

The helpdesk probably wouldn't have suggested that setting, or even attempted to support you, because if you order from an ISP but decline their router in most cases there is a disclaimer saying you're on your own if things go wrong.  It's one of the reasons I always get the ISP router even if I'm not going to use it (which I haven't for years).  Not that I've changed internet much.
