Sorry like most infomation on the new network, its locked up in confidentiality clauses etc.

June 09 is T day as Telecom puts it so at some stage in June this year they will start to retail the network to the public. Unsure if Gen I clients may get on sooner but to be safe June is the earliest it will be available.

On another note, i am still unable to get 850 UMTS signal in my side of CHCH but i was able to get 2100mhz when closer to the CBD. I would imagine that wont be very far away. I have an 880u data card that can recieve 850/2100 so i can see whats going on. The new site at Parklands has a sister with NZ Comms putting there mast across the road.

I cannot get NZ Comms signal yet but that wont be long. I wonder with only a smaller box for the Telecom site if its a WCDMA site only? I have noticed many of the new sites over the last year in CHCH have had extensions and new antennas added and a new box obviously for 850/2100 gear. But the parklands site has only one small box, i would be surprised if it was a CDMA only site, more likely WCDMA only site.

Behodar: I just remembered that "they" were doing something to one of the cell towers here (Whakatane) a couple of weeks ago. I was driving past and noticed some work going on. I don't have a compatible phone so I can't check to see whether it was related to the new network though (I don't even know whether it's a Telecom tower).

Update: I had a chance to play with an iPhone today. The Carrier menu did not list Telecom.

bbman: probably was a Telecom site if it was an existing site.

There are growing complaints about CDMA service around the traps, new network could be part of the problem but i would imagine the capacity for voice on 1Xrtt is the key problem

Could frequency overlapping or some form of leakage be causing issues? If UMTS is running on 850Mhz and CDMA is around 800 or so?

CDMA also uses the 850Mhz frequency. In New Zealand Telecom run CDMA on band B, band A was used for 025/TDMA and will be used for WCDMA.
