That's just intolerance; Telecom's call centres based in NZ are already multinational.

The Filipino’s speak with an American type accent for the most part, and unlike some people's belief’s, speak perfect English, and should do considering their education system is taught in English. The Philippines is also the third largest English speaking country in the world.

PS: Please don’t type in text speak, it’s hard to read, and against the forum rules.

I don't know where people get the idea that Philipino's have "fake" american accents. That's like saying "I hate those Austrian's/Dutch with their fake German accents". It's just how they speak english.

It's sad for the people who have lost their jobs, but as people have pointed out, natural churn will probably account for the positions being outsourced. Plus, 250 out of how many thousands of job positions isn't a huge loss to the NZ work force. End of the day, Telecom has to drop costs somewhere. Unless everyone votes for the Government to start subsidising costs?

You'll find that they are taught english by American teachers, or teachers who were taught by Americans. So they learn to pronounce english words in an American style. Am sure if we sent over kiwi teachers they would be saying "fush & chups" like the rest of us Laughing

It's hardly a "fake" accent though is it. I'm sure they aren't huddling around in the call centre there and trying to see who can come up with the best Texan or New Yorkian accent

In my experience,   the call centre staff from Manilla speak far better english than the call centre staff in NZ.

I can't speak for their technical ability though as I've never had any problmes that require that sort of knowledge.

Having spoken to some other people,  they assumed that when the person they spoke to had an accent (usually Indian or South East Asian) then they must be calling overseas, when in actual fact they are probably talking to someone in the Tron.

Its just like calling dell in malaysia - yeah, they have an accent but they are fully understandable. Whereas some NZ desks hire people fresh off the plane from somewhere that you just cant understand.
