Real transfer rates will normally be slower than sync rates but I don't see why they'd be that low

Maybe your PC is configured badly

Well I believe that I am also shaped as my sync rate is now

DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode: Fast
Downstream Rate: 17861 kbps
Upstream Rate: 164 kbps

Yet I struggle to pull 500k/s when realisticly it should be ALOT faster than this

You either missed a digit on that Upstream rate or it is seriously low for ADSL2.

Hi, Aschteev, try another modem, I have used several of those Belkins, they are complete rubbish, some firmware versions lock the MTU down to around 1200 which means throughput can be seriously fragmented and impacts on throughput.

From what you describe your ADSL connection is fine, or at least so far above what you are seeing as a throughput that something else is at play.

I would suggest either duff modem, or your ISP has throttled your connection.

Damon, your limit at 500kB/s (around 4.5Mb/s) is due to the fact that you are on a Fs/128k plan which means your uplink speed is only around 128kb/s (or 160kb/s) which limits that rate at which ack packets can be returned to the sending server, this typically causes the DL rate to top out around 4.5-5Mb/s, change to a Fs/Fs plan and you should potentially achieve a DL speed around 80% of your sync rate assuming the server and ISP's backhaul will support it.

Can I ask what street you are on?

For me;

"This address is scheduled to be connected to a roadside cabinet with ADSL2+ technology in approximately Apr 2011."
Most of Avonhead is nearly rural, L1 living zones. I am very surprised to see your cabinet has been upgraded.

I bought a house in Avonhead (Staveley St) in September last year.
Initial connection speeds were around 2200 down.
After rewiring everything, with cat6 to the demarc, and a short run to the first jack I now sync at 3300 down.
We had a Telecom technician come around to check my install and he said that he was surprised I even got that.

We are on Toorak Ave. I thought I was only on ADSL 1 as well, as the tool said the same for me. Yet my upload speed sync at 945 kbps. the max adsl1 upload is 896 if im correct? what are the maximum sync rates for ADSL2+, and what would someone like me expect to get if they are 1.5km away from an exchange?

and that speedtest result is from canty uni, isn't it :p

Yeah it is :p

That annoys me how close we are and you are adsl2....we are literally 2 streets from each other.

This 4.5Mb/sec max on a 128k up line is not strictly correct. Yes I know it's on the Telecom website and it's quoted all over the place - but at least in some cases, it's not correct. The theoretical limit with a 128k upstream with latencies typical on ADSL lines is about 9.xMb/sec. I have regularly seen high 8.xMb/sec on one of my ADSL lines at home (15xxx/160 - where 160 is the atm sync rate which translates into about 128kbit IP).

See this calculator... http://www.wand.net.nz/~perry/max_download.php

I believe that the 4.5Mbit figure was arrived at calculating a ACK for each packet which isn't the way it's always done.

N

Hi, yes agree you have mentioned this previously and accept your stance, but in the hundreds of connections I have dealt with it would be a very close to measured throughputs from speedtest checks, so for your average punter it quite closely represents their experience.

Cheers

you could ring xtra and ask to do a port reset, the exchange link 6600/900k is still a bit slow for an ADSL2 connection, would expect the modem to at least report 5 figures. The upload looks about right but the download is a bit light, also you have used the same server for the test try auckland WorldX see if it is any differenct

my sync is

Down Up
Rate: 20129 kbs 888 kbs
Max Rate: 20129 kbs 894 kbs
Noise Margin: 15.0 dB 16.3 dB
Attenuation: 5.2 dB 1.1 dB
Output Power: 16.6 dBm 12.0 dBm

Protocol: G.DMT2+ Annex A

but only getting 7mb/s, telecom said they will be updating my profile soon
so you better contact your isp first.

UPDATE: When I rang telecom originally, I got given the whole 'do the speedtest blah 3 times a day over 3 days blah blah'. Sent that away last night, and got a phone call about an hour ago from telecom saying that they had done some tests (how many tests are there!?) and that he thinks there could be a fault on the line, so has arranged for a technician to come out tomorrow afternoon! Will be interesting to see the results.

I wonder how many people in NZ don't know how fast there internet should be... Or recgonise when there internet connection isn't preforming to its full potential... hmm...

That sounds word for word what they did for me.

The reason this 'test' failed. Is because I was busy unplugging and plugging cables! The tech found nothing wrong.

Wahoo! Tech came round with his line checker tool - said I should be able to sync between 11-13Mbit down. Asked if he had a modem, he chucked his D-Link in, and it immediately synced at 11.5Mbit. Jumped on speedtest and it downloaded at about 10.5Mbit so went and got a new modem today and its all good!

Can get consistently 1MB/sec + download speeds from the likes of microsoft and apple.

Belkin sucks. Not only was it syncing low, it was also limiting throughput, and not connecting to some sites (bnz.co.nz, nationalbank.co.nz and some others).

Thanks to all those that replied and offered help!
