Hi i am on Big Time and well the pings to aus servers are crap most the time but in a way it is a good thing as it has made me do more work rather then gaming

as for downloads i have managed to download just over 1 terabyte in a 1 month period of time
this is with a ssl connection on a usenet server and i get a constant 800 kilabytes on it

as for speed most the time it is fine for most things such as youtube
but at times download over a non ssl conection cann be very slow

is it worth it well if you are like me and download a lot then hell yea it is worth it

As others have found it a great plan if you can get around the shapers, and when you do the rest get the dregs, which gets us back to the real issue, there are no free meals, and there is no all you can eat plan, its all about the marketing, you can fool some of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

Well. here my first impressions..
I switched over to telecom bigtime yesterday from xnet. I got sick of the mail outages and adsl/vfx outages at the end ..
Web browsing at anytime is the same or sometimes faster.
Any type of file download, whether it be torrents or updates or even just downloading a program is slow, anout 20k to 30k at peak time. Torrents can get up to 80k to 100k. This is from 9am to 2am which i fully understand its shaped..
Outside peak/shaping 2am to 9am downloads fly. I d/led a 750meg movie via a torrent at 760k at 6am this morning and left a 2.5 gig one going when i went to bed and it finished itself off after 2am.
It doesn't really worry me as I can schedule it to d/l inbtween 2am and 9am anyway so its fine..
The best I could ever get out of xnet was around 350k on a torrent d/l

Youtube and online TV just flys playing straight thru with no pauses at anytime which is great.
Any speedtests I do at anytime at speedtest.net show my speed at 6.5 to 7 Mb/s down and .80 Mb/s up so I'm happy with that.

I did one just before posting this and its below..

All in all I'm happy sofar..
Lets bring on Tivo now !

What are the speeds like for ftp connections(with or without ssl/tls)?
Any tests covering this will be appreciated.

Depends on the time of day and where the ftp server is located.

Could you expand a little on that?

Perhaps like US ftp ssl @ time x K/sec
NL ftp clear @ time x K/sec, etc
or even average/peak/slowest speeds you've noticed per thread to a ftp server.

Any further info regarding ftp speeds will be appreciated.

Speedtest is a false representation of what actually happens in the real world, it all comes down to how shapers are implemented, traffic shapers are firstly just bottom line money shapers for the ISP. But it seams most ISPs will try this method first, and good luck to them.

I wouldn't say false, I would say that there are a lot more factors that affect browsing and downloading speeds. It gives you a basic benchmark to see how your connection is performing.

So I'm thinking of switching to Big Time. How slow are RapidShare/MegaUpload/other filesharing websites during 9am to 2pm? At the moment I find RapidShare is quite slow (I believe Telecom have blacklisted it), but other websites I can max out my connection at about 600 KiB/s.

I use big time and a rapidshare premium account, you can easily destroy 100GB worth of data, best move I ever did :)

Torrents will be very slow, it even says it when you purchase it, but with rapidshare I get 300KB/s, so a movie every 2-3 hours.

not bad ;)

P.S to get youtube to load straight away, load the page a little bit then refresh it, movie should start playing right away.

You can get 300 KiB/s during peak hours? Wicked! At the moment I'm only getting around 200 and that's on Go Large. Might call up this arvo and make the switch lol. Though I don't have an ADSL2+ compatible router...

I have just been forced to move onto another plan. 900m from the exchange, ADSL2+ and the best speeds I have been able to receive over the past week has been 0.80Mbs... Spent hours on the line with various reps and I was told more than once that these speeds are ACCEPTABLE. This did not impress me at all. I understand that the plan is shaped and that's fine with me, but 3 people trying to use 0.50Mbs on average just doesn't work.

After changing to an unshaped my speeds are back to a far more useable speed of around 3Mbs.

I would just cation anyone who is planning on moving to this plan because of the unlimited data. You will be locked into a $200/12 month contract with speeds that may end up resembling dialup with no recourse as this is deemed fine by Telecom..

Where are you getting $200 a month from? And 12 month contact? This plan is $59.95 per month (Will tolls) and has no term specifically (Although new Telecom BB Customers may need to sign up for 12 months with Telecom, but you are free to change plans once per month.

the $200 is the early termination charge. I was a new customer, hence the 12 contract. I have changed the plan but I am not happy that I have had too. I changed ISP's specifically for the big time plan, now I am locked into a term with Telecom on a plan that does not suit..

The fact that Telecom believes that 0.5Mbs for web browsing is acceptable is appalling to me.
