dawnraid: I got the same letter this morning, Once again monopolistic telecom rears their ugly head. I dont recall seeing in the contract I signed with them that they could change my plan, or charge me $10 more per month for essentially the same service (I dont upload much so, I dont really care about FS upload). Once again shafted by Telecom. I'll probably end up going to Big Time, as I would go through their recommended Explorers 10gb in a day. Might have a chat to my mate at the com com and see what he thinks.

well it did say that. which means that presumably didn't read the contract, or didn't pay attention, before you signed it.

What sort of person signs something without reading it? that is just asking for trouble.

Why would you even assume that the contract would state they have no right to change your plan? you have the right to change your plan.
Do you think telecom would write Ts and Cs for some sort of infinite service agreement where they guarentee you can have Go Large for $50 until the end of time?

Yes, but what other ISP's have plans with unlimited DL's, see my point?p

not really, your point seems to be that telecom are offering you something that no other ISP does, and you hate them for it.

I am a little miffed we have to change over. I don't like the fact that we have to pay an extra $10 a month when my area isn't even ADSL2+ capable. I think the extra $10 charge for ADSL2+ speed is fair, but do not think it's fair I have to pay for that part of the plan when I wont be recieving it for who knows how long. Switch me to BT, I have no problem, but don't charge me $59.95 until you can provide me with ADSL2+. Seems fair to me.

That does make sense, my area won't be getting ADSL2+ cabinets until this time next year (if that)

But you should still get a faster upload speed even on ADSL connections...

Yeah but like profrink said, if you don't have an ADSL2+ cabinet or exchange in your area, you aren't going to benefit much...

Well you benefit from going 4mb max to 8mb so "Doubling your connection" to say,

tho you will likely connect at around 7mb/s not the full 8

There's a lot of misinformation here so far - and some accurate stuff.

Bigtime says "optimised for ADSL2+" - this means that the port profile on the DSLAM doesn't artificially constrain either the upstream or downstream paths, whereas on Go Large, while the downstream path wasn't constrained, the upstream was limited to ~128kbit (Yes I know it's 160 at the ATM level)

Note that on Big Time, the increased upstream is on ADSL1 and ADSL2+ lines.

This means that if previously you got something like 18000/160 on Go Large, you're likely to get something like 18000/1000 on Big Time.

If you got something like 7000/160 on Go Large, you're probably going to see an increase in the upstream, not the downstream - perhaps something like 7000/600.

While 128kbit upstream is theoretically enough to support up to 9mbit downloads under ideal conditions, having a higher upstream means that if you are up or downloading several things at once (multithreaded downloads, multiple computers, uploading photos while browsing the web etc), you will probably see a benefit from getting a faster upstream speed.

Now, as Telecom quite openly say, Big Time is traffic managed, so often the speeds you'll get are limited not by the ADSL connection you have, but by thte time of day and type of traffic you are generating. That's outside the scope of this discussion.

I won't. the fastest sync speed I ever got was 3.2mbit, (now 2.2mbit after telecom did work on my line and refuse to fix the problem they caused while trying to fix another)

Somehow the fact I had 3.2mbit for over a year (stable, I might add) means nothing to them. Apparently, 2.2Mbit is the highest I can get

We have both big time and go large here and big time is def quicker most probably due to the unconstrained upload. I'm not saying hugely quicker but general surfing is much better. I tried a torrent on each and there was little difference.

We can now phase out the golarge plan and biff the old phone number as a "faxability" number on the second line.

The actual terms may have been slightly different, but from the Telecom website:

"We may, at our sole discretion, change, withhold, suspend, restrict, replace or terminate any of our Services in any circumstances if we think it is necessary or desirable"

I see it as replacing Go Large with Bigtime. Or maybe just terminating it. Either way.

I would be less offended less if Telecom more clearly explain why they phase off Go Large and what is different between Go Large and Big Time. As always, their writing is more like ultimatum to me.
And I'm not even live in ADSL 2+ zone...

it is disappointing that telecom has taken such a unilateral step. I would have been happy to make the shift with out complains if they promised ADSL 2+ speeds. which in my case is due to be installed only in July 2011 - 22 months from now.

They had an article on their website, detailing how they stopped signups for Go Large because they had not worked out a good way to "effectively manage bandwidth for this plan"

I guess with the cache idea and other new technologies they can now do that, and relaunched it as Big Time.

Maybe it is also easier for them to upgrade it to ADSL2+ and forget about any artificial speed limits.

Even if you're not in ADSL2+ zone you should still see improved performance in the faster upload.

Other than that, it's a good excuse to get more money off you too!

They are grand fathering the 128k upload plans, this is normal it no plan lasts as is forever. They are not obligated to provide the same plan at the same price forever, they have given you sufficient warning.

For +$10 you get FS upload and the ability to get interleaving turned off over Go Large, easily worth it in my opinon and not very much of an increase.

I got the letter as well on friday and switched to Big Time, hopefully it will be better then Bigtime
