taniwha: i was actaully really impressed with the 5600 camera maybe i needed a cable ? ;-)

It comes with a cable in the retail box.

spazz: Wow, my case is exactly the same as the original post! Fed up with my Harrier, however I DON'T have a 7400, I'm looking at the 5600 and Nokia 6255... The 5600 looks pretty daymn chunky - how does it feel in ya pocket? I don't want a brick! But having said that, it also looks like a pretty nice phone... The 7400 keypad looks ugly compared to the 5600... any thoughts on either three of those phones?

Im torn. I have a 7400. Love it to bits. I also use Push 2 Talk a -lot- for both business and personal use (great for lowering the phone bill). I really want a better camera on the phone, so should really get a 5600 - the size doesnt bother me - I am 6'7" and will dwarf it anyway. I would love bluetooth though (for my bluetooth headset).

Whats a boy to do??>???

I reliable source inside the handset development circles tell me that Sanyo have indicated they will be putting Bluetooth in some future handsets. No idea of when though.

Me got several digiatal cameras as well, just that i always carry my ph with me. hardly ever got a camera on me, so if the ph had a semi ok camera would be helpful :)
Have been looking at the new nokia 6265 due for release soon. might stick with the 7400 for now and maybe get that one when it comes out.

It depends on your definition of 'most basic'. I was referring to the fact that any new camera from any of the mainstream manufacturers would be in the 3MP to 8MP range.

Personally, I believe that 2MP is the minimum that I would accept for printing or long term archival.

This would be fantastic. Trouble is, when the product is released to the US, it takes ages for it to reach our market. Factor in the PTC red tape, and it could take a couple of years before we see any bluetooth enabled Sanyo handsets available here.

I didn't think PTC were that slow.. the only times things get held up is when the handset has problems, like the infamous 6255.

Sure. 2MP i think is the accepted standard for "photo quality" 6x4's. We should only be 6 - 12 months away from a CDMA 2MP here in NZ. (But whether it will have P2T or BT remains to be seen!!

I, like many people have a good quality digital camera, but normally dont carry it with me unless i know in advance i will need it. This is where a camera phone proves its worth - as a backup device.

With the Sprint deal, as long as its a Sprint phone, PTC and total time to market should be shorter than normal. Maybe only 2 - 4 months apparently (all going well).

See - even -I- can be optimistic sometimes LOL

It's not just the resolution that's important here, because dedicated cameras have much better optics and more flexible controls. I take your point, though, because if you're caught out in a situation when you don't have a camera handy, then a camera phone is better than nothing.

I think eventually the day will come when we can throw away our cameras and digital music players in favour of a device which performs all of these functions to an acceptable standard, but it's not going to happen in the immediate future.

You are right there - I have used just about every 0.3MP camera phone on the NZ market, and the results of the end picture vary widely.

Its an exciting time to be part of this tecnological world, but i wonder what toys our kids and grandkids might have in the future that will make our iPods and 5MP camera phones look like TRS80's and ZX81's

my two cents.
I own both the 7400 and the 5600.
I would never pay $900 for the 5600 phone. ( I got a discount on it through work) I LOVE it but it is just not worth it. An Ipod is half the price. I'd only get one if you can get it cheaper.

ANYWAY MY REVIEW
The sanyo phones are by far the best designed phones in terms of ease of use/layout of the little os inside, and the exterior of the phone.
They look so good compared to others. Nokias, even the newest model, are really ugly.
Also the sanyos are nice to text with, the buttons on other models I have tried are too hard.
I upgraded from the sanyo 7400 for these reasons: (and if they apply to you I would recommend it).

- I use my phone to take quick snapshots at random times when I need them for the work I do, even though only a camera phone, i need the best quality on a phone I can get. Lugging a camera around is a hassle.
In the light only, :( the 5600 camera is far better than the 7400 one.
Warning in dimmish light the camera is RUBBISH.

- I have an IPOD, but this thing is a little ghetto blaster hehe! I can take it around with me and use it where I don't have a stereo. Wicked. (the sound for a phone is awesome).

- Basically having an mp3 player/camera/dictaphone/portable harddrive all in one is really convenient.
- the rubber came off my sanyo 7400, not cool, i wanted a phone without rubber parts for this reason

- the keypad/inside on the 7400 is grey, i'm not keen on grey, i want a silver phone. mmmm sexy.
-The display (graphic menu) is funky, and the colors of the backgrounds are nice. (well two of them).

- there are improvements on the 7400 such as, you can add pictures to your phone book contacts (i get over enthused by small things like that).

- I was about to buy a memory stick, and wanted a new phone at the same time....

In my opinion also this is the best looking phone on the market in NZ. Aesthetics and functionality are both of equal importance to me.

My minisd (memory stick) is playing up though, but two people I know don't have this issue, so make sure you get them to try it out before you buy one, I have to take mine back for a swap.... typical telecom, i have had 3 faulty phones from them......
I bet the cards are cheap as......

Thanks for great feedback. Have decided to keep the 7400 for now. wait for some of the new nokia mobiles that hopefully will be coming out in later part of this year. :)

Do you think that an agreement between Sprint and Telecom has not sped up the time to market?

Why would I make that up? (Quite an odd statement to make??)

Telecom have publicly stated that the deal with Sprint will bring the handsets in quicker.
