I am trying to get one on loan from TNZ to have at the Geekzone party so people there can access the Internet via Wi-Fi with the EV-DO network behind... Pretty cool.

We usually put a T3G card in a laptop and share the connection that way :-)

Brutal and unclean, but hey, it works.

i imagine all sorts of data going from your mobile device, to you home PC

how about a device in a vehicle reports back the location, speed, and other data back to your home PC, then you know where the teenager is, or when the delivery van will arrive, or how far away the bus is, or which bike is leading a cycle race.

weather stations all over the vineyard/orchard reporting rainfall, windspeed, temperature whatever.

live music gigs, or podcasts from a venue, uploading over mobile. (maybe bootleg)

video bloggers reporting live from anywhere with cellphoen coverage

Running X11/X.org applications on your desktop PC while sitting on oriental parade beach with your feet in the water.

No need to dream. The bandwidth required for this kind of appliction is already here - even GPRS or CDMA 1xRTT will do. I had first hand experience with an application that does exactly this.

This will be something that venues etc. will start to watch out for - anyone present can become a broadcaster. Movie releases too.

This has cool possibilities.

With a Pocket PC Phone Edition, and an external mic threaded up and hanging off your hat/collar/whatever this is probably very possibly right now with not a lot of effort...

No needs :-) I've been doing this for years using amateur radio. - The reasons for not doing this over cmda/gprs etc has always been the price of data.
yet, would be interesting to meet someone doing this, if only to have a nice geeky converstation about ohms and hertz.

I was thinking more of bands doing this themselves. - the sound quality from a pocketPc in your hat would be awful.

I guess the advantage is, you don't have it recorded into your hat - it's uploading on the fly.

I was listening to the BBC go digital podcast last night, and they interviewed a priest who live audio-cast the pope's funeral procession. He's since got into audio-tourist podcast, and descibes places he is standing in while you listen to the background sounds of places in the vatican that you and i will never be allowed. He was very keen to begin video-casting next. Sounds like the future to me

There is a distinction between CDMA 2000 and WCDMA (a.k.a. 3GSM or UMTS). I am sure you know that.
