There is currently Packet Data (3G) roaming to Oz and Circuit Switched Data (dial up) roaming to the US. Not all devices (Apache and Harrier included) support Circuit Switched Data. Typically you would use a service like iPASS which is a dialer that calls a local POP in the US rather than making an ISP toll call back to NZ.
