Brian Gaynor is a smart guy. He's not an engineer though.

What exactly what did Telecom underinvest on? And don't answer the question by saying "RNC's" because that's not an answer to the question I'm asking. There is no need for additional RNC's at present with the load and customer numbers Telecom have.

But he is right in that Telecom themselves have said that they are going to be working on this with Alcatel - business code for "what the hell did you do wrong???"

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. Gaynor is not an engineer and that story very clearly shows that with the poor wording.

Telecom worked with ALU on the issue because ALU manage the network for Telecom and have a contract to fully support it. This differs slightly from the way some other mobile networks are run.

I'd still like to know where you think Telecom underinvested.

What's the reason for the big difference in numbers between Vodafone & Telecom considering a very similar sized customer base? (Although I realise a lot of Telecom customers are yet to switch from CDMA, they'd no doubt have planned for that to come across)

Yes but would you invest all your money for a new network, so it can hold 5million users (Just a random number - dnt know real figures) when only 500'000 users are going to be using at present.

I would think from a business point of view, You spend up large on Coverage and things like RNC's which don't need 6 to run 500'000 users at a few million $$ each save the money, leave it in the bank earning interest until the network gets close to needing an upgrade.

You mean the difference in the numbers of RNC's?

Quite simply Telecom run high capacity Alcatel Lucent RNC's that have significantly more capacity than the older Nokia Siemens ones that Vodafone run. Vodafone also don't use every RNC for voice & data like XT does, some of Vodafone's are dedicated for data services only such as HSPA+

Comparing RNC numbers isn't comparing apples with apples. Your question could very easily be turned about to ask why Vodafone need 6 RNC's when XT only has 2...

Whatever the problem in the XT network they have to do something quick to improve it's reliability. I note even TelstraClear says that they are keen to sign up XT customers when they launched their MVNO mobile plans yesterday. Two major outages within five weeks is not good enough and even Paul Reynolds admitted this when he announced his compensation package in Dunedin earlier this week.
