Ragnor: What does a tracert to the servers address show?

It does this wonderful thing where after matchmaking the game it palms it off to whoever initially hosted it, works well for lans tho, you all hook into steam and setup the game and then it's hosted by a PC on the lan, no lag. Here's the current tracert, no doubt it'll be different after 6pm tonight. I'll get tcpview going and tracert the matching server to.

C:\Users\matt>tracert 118.90.59.158

Tracing route to ip-118-90-59-158.xdsl.xnet.co.nz [118.90.59.158]

Forgive me if I'm wrong but ...

1 89 ms 99 ms 99 ms dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]

^^^
If this is your modem router shouldn't it be <1 ms. Anything above that would indicate a faulty modem router IMHO. First hop definitely shouldn't be as high as that. I only get that sort of latency until i'm about to leave NZ at the Auckland gateway.

Also if you're wondering about the exact address a connection is going to you can always use netstat -n and find the IP there going out a particular port

That's normal on the Thomson/Technicolor devices.

I must of had luck with the Telecom helpdesk because although they had to go to their superior a couple of times to get more info they seemed to know what is needed about how basic internet and networking works, they helped me and answered all my questions as i would expect and no "script reading" either i got lucky or you had bad luck

I had a US robotics modem and when you run a tracert it would show something like
90ms...1ms....1ms    192.168.0.1 router

The first ping is always slow.

Anyhow I am wondering
Telecom dont peer at the auckland exchange
Xnet do last i checked

I dont know if im right on this but wouldnt your traffic to xnet be taking a rather long route
If you were with an isp that peered with xnet, wouldnt it be faster?

We have our terminal servers via an Orcon connection so our customers have a bigger choice of ISP's, as well as a telecom connection for those who choose telecom and want a low ping.

Wow really ?

Do you know of any other routers that do this ?

And how to tell if someone has one of those routers just from the traceroute ?

I dont know why they do it but it seems when you ping some models of routers, the first ping always takes longer. Heaps of routers do this, but its always a pain when you have to send in traceroutes to an ISP because they instantly think that your router is causing whatever problem you are reporting

The 99ms for the 1st hop is a "quirk" of the Thomson modem's it has no actual affect on game latency.

However 40-50ms for local hops, looks like you have interleaving on to me.  Ring up the helpdesk and ask for interleaving to be turned off.

That should reduce your general game latency but I don't think that will help much with match making server problems as that's down to Big Time shaping misclassifying gaming traffic.

from my experience with telecom help desk i can say that the service they provide is simply amazing. I've never had any issues with them(help desk). been a user for half a year now, had to call them twice or thrice. last time - regardless of the issue that everyone have been dealing with over the last week. the person on the phone was very kind to explain that the issue is known and that telecom is doing their best to resolve the issue. today after work hours he called me to confirm that my network is working properly. i was very happy to receive this call eventhou i wasn't expecting it.

Hi Ragnor,

I've definately got interleaving off, Steam has issued a patch to help with match making and that definately helps. I've been watching tcpview as the game is setup, once it launches it hands it off the server to a direct connect between the two parties in the game, the IP is my mates and the ports used are definately open.

There's something dodgy going on here tho, failed tracerts and pings, and the high latency problem is affecting more than just big time, these (and other) forums have complaints from Adventure and Pro plan users aswell! Hopefully TC does something before it looses more than just XT customers.

Cheers,

Matt.

50ms sounds high to me for interleaving off, for comparison at home mines 8-10ms for the first few hops after my router/modem.
