Install Networx on each computer, it's a great free bandwidth monitor.
http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/

In the settings:

1: You can configure the start date of the month to match your plan/billing start date with your ISP

2: Tick the checkbox for "Ignore Traffic within the lan" as you don't want to record traffic between your machines.

3: If you have multitple computers running networx you can enable sync so they all know the "total" data used rather than just what the machine it's installed on used.

It's been mentioned a couple of times and it's worth saying again... Turn off your router for 24 hours and check the usage meter afterwards to see if any data was accrued for that day.

If you have the time, and can deal with it, unplug all the PCs from the router and leave the router on for a day and see if any data is chewed up there.

Please let us know if you are able, or have done, either of these tests.

No call from Telecom today as promised. No surprise though. I have been using a 3G Vodem today and between 12.55pm & 5.53pm I have used 13mb of data. 1 other PC has been idle, connected via wireless to my router and has used 22.81mb download & 23.58mb upload. I will total turn off the router tomorrow for 24 hrs to check that.

I connect to my work VPN. Once I'm in, does everything I do go towrds my data count ? If yes, then it dosen't make sense that I used 13mb via Vodem and other days I'm sky high with data use. I'm getting very confused & frustrated.

Telecom Usage Meter sometimes does wonders. dont take it too seriously. run software like Netlimiter or similar to check your own data usage. also it was recommended above to swith off your wireless connection and see what telecom meter says.

Just 1 PC to VPN

No IM tools.

No pinholes / Port-forwards, that I know of.

I do take it serious when I get to my limit and they cut me back to dial up !!

I have turned off my router to test at the moment.

Don't use your router/modem for 24 hours. Also VPN traffic is traffic. Bits are bits, regardless of what type of content is being transported.

*23MB upload when idle* seems fishy to me! Over only 5 hours! At that rate you would be doing around 100MB per day just in upload. I would check that PC...

Hmm GZ won't let me edit my post...

I know 100MB per day doesn't stack up to 16.5GB over 20 days (more like 2GB), but I would check that PC anyway. Who knows: it could be changing from day to day...

Whats your router if its an old DSL-302 or the like they have been known to start chewing data (on the WAN side) and no explainantion.

I have run 2 different sorts of spyware / adaware programs all on PC's and they both so nothing.

Stats show I have up loaded 6 Gigs since March 8th.
