I can't post you the SPC code however i need to look further into this (get hold of two hyundais)

I'll post with my findings

Yes it can be changed back or if it ever goes out of use, the network will force EVRC on. :-)

paradoxsm:
Failures or old stuff long forgotten about.

GSM HR 5k, a half rate codec that sounded diabolical.
GSM FR 8k, just very old and artificial sounding by todays standards
CDMA QCELP 8k, reasonably good but suffered from a tinnyness.

Off topic but the first two codecs when googled return this (as in THIS thread that you are reading right now!) thread:
GSM HR 5K
GSM FR 8K

I can't check Wikipedia for the codecs as it appears to be blocked here most likely due to the great firewall of China.

You shouldnt need an SPC code to change the vocoder unless it's a samsung.

I must get this looked into as most of the phones out there with the changeability are Hyundais.

unless someone wants to loan/send me a (even partially stuffed) Hyundai?

an interesting site on camparsons of vocoders.. I have one interesting coder called LBPACK that can handle 44KHz at 14Kbps, I'll put up some data on it in future.

LBpack is on
http://www.rjamorim.com/rrw/lbpack.html

But I have a much better version with frontends i'll upload

the 6 digit SPC number only lets you into 3 options and only of any use when you swap phone numbers.

bakermannz: nope, it just goes straight to asking for the spc code..

suks!! i wanted to change the vocoder lol

i also tried it on my mums TX-115c and it also goes straight to the spc code screen (her code is different to mine tho so can't get into it)

after you put the code in don't press anything until a menu shows up.
on my tx95c there are 6 different menus.

1. phone info

maybe you are pressing ok after putting the code in and its skipping the main menu and going to a sub one..

You probably won't "notice" a difference but you will be doing a lot less asking what people said and you will sound far better to the person at the other end, especially to other cellular networks (GSM in particular)

If you feel the other was better, you can always just change it back.

Quite an interesting read and listen about those different codecs.

I haven't had that many calls to or from CDMA handsets recently so I can't really comment on the quality myself. One has to wonder why people haven't really commented on voice quality till recently - after all as you said, it is the core function of the phone.

Have you tried any of the PPC devices yet? It will be interesting to see if they can be switched over to the better sounding codec.

(Actually thinking of buying a CDMA PPC sooner or later since Voda haven't really been impressing me lately)

A mute point really given that the Telecom network decoders are EVRC not QCELP. I wouldn't recommend that you muck around to much with the engineering menus.

cokemaster: If it wasn't for trolls like me, just imagine what Geekzone would be like! :P

You couldnt out-troll a mini-troll even if you trolled up to troll day in troll town with your best troll, and trolled all day... [said Dis... smiling and laughing and not to be taken seriously]

So Jama - does that mean that any percieved benefit from changing the codec is psychological only due to the TNZ network converting the phone back to EVRC anyway?
