i use firefox and foxit reader for pdf's .
when i go to get bill image a dialogue box pops up asking to open or save the pdf.
your problem appears to be that you have not assigned a default program to open pdf,s

freitasm: The Telecom website is annoying. I have three accounts, and I don't use Acrobat - I use something else. Iam trying to save the bill, which is in PDF format, but there's not link to the bill that allows me to do right-click Save As.

Bloody annoying if you ask me.

I have Foxit reader installed and use Opera as my WB. When I go to the Telecom billing site it opens as a PDF using the Foxit plugin in the Opera browser. This gives me the option to save the PDF to where ever I want by clicking on the Save icon...

I use PrimoPDF. It's my default reader and it's happy to open files that are downloaded from both IE and Firefox.

I will repeat my point: the way it's coded it expects Adobe Reader to be used INSIDE the IE browsing, not as an independent app. Not everyone uses Adobe Reader, so this is a bad move.

bazzer: So you can't view the PDF in your preferred software, or you can't save it? What makes you think they want you to be able to save it (or care if you can or can not)?

The PDF is an invoice and is legally required as a document for GST purposes. It must be saved on my system, since Telecom does not hold those files for the amount of time I am required to hold them. Also if I am to close my account with Telecom then I lose access to that part of their site and therefore to the documents.

Yes, I do have to save them.

I can save the file if I use Firefox. This is not the problem. The problem is that on the most widely browser out there Telecom expects people to be using a specific program to open it by default. It shouldn't need to be like that.

Hmm it's simply a post to a page which returns a application/pdf response stream.

Practically all other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera) show an open with/save dialogue (even without any pdf reader installed). It would be a bit unexpected IE8 doesn't do this (I believe it's to do with https and IE8 not allowing https sites to store data in tempoary files).

Anyway yes given IE8 is the most common browser now (~25% market share), it should really be submitted as a issue and they should change the code.

i fail to see what the problem is . i fired up ie8 went to my " your Telecom " selected a date for a bill to view and pressed view .
the Foxit window popped up and asked me whether i wanted to read the Pdf or save it.
i have not used acrobat reader for a number of years now and with windows 7 i have never been asked to install acrobat reader to view a file . and this is irrespective of which browser i am using. i send out nearly all my invoices in pdf form and on a couple of occasions i have heard of people trying to read a pdf directly in outlook which proves that acquiring the file has got nothing to do with which type of pdf reader you have or not have .

in Konqueror it automatically loads the external Okular.
Same behaviour in Firefox
is there no way in IE advanced settings for it to open pdf docs in external applications?
Is there no way to set your pdf software to capture links from IE8?
