Well I'm located in West Auckland, and I have interleaving off. ISPs telecom, 22 db line attenuation. Sadly I don't have a splitter installed, so only 8mbit connection, does this affect ping? As you saw at the start my ping was averaging about 8ms, just wondering if a splitter would help haha

No, definitely wouldnt help your ping... Your consistent ping around 8ms is among the fastest real world example I have seen for ADSL in NZ.

I also don't know why you think a splitter is specifically needed for a rate better than 8mbit. To get more than 8mbit, you need to be relatively close to the exchange (or cabinet), have an ADSL2+ capable router and have ADSL2+ equipment in the exchange/cabinet.

Regardless of distance you should have a splitter or filters.

Connected directly to Massey exchange, physically 500metres away, 1.2km down the copper cable. 22db max theoretical speed is around 18mbit, would be nice to get close to that haha

150ms ping on a mobile network is very good, i'm told this can be a lot lower too.

Wow! I knew there was a difference but not that much! I heard interleaving is for error correction, and my line is rather bad (42.0 dB down / 25.0 dB up). If I had it turned off would it decrease speeds or anything?

Yes, your sync rates are likely to decrease a bit with interleaving turned off.

i've noticed that connections with interleaving turned OFF with fs/fs acheive slightly lower pings than connections with fs/128kbps with interleaving off.

Are you on a FS/128kbps plan? If so, that could explain why you get 14ms and others can get 9ms (also depends on what server you are pinging to of course)

Nope, this difference is almost certainly to do with being further away from the Akl...

Normal speeds range from 8-9ms to 30ms+ based on position down the country... (All interleaving off)

Does anyone know the latency on a local landline phone call through POTS network (not VoIP)? It must be almost 0ms? You can tell there is a definite delay in mobile phone calls, but landline calls are pretty much instant.... ie, two callers can sing a song together on a local phone call, but you can't on VoIP or through a mobile call due to slight latency.

I would like to move to orcon, sadly my parents weren't too smart and got locked into a 2 year contract. Best ISP in my area I reckon, they got some good equipment in my exchange

Remember you can break the contract - there will likely be a fee for it though...

Also, please remember there's more to Broadband performance than just access speeds. I won't give any recommendations, (as I will be accused of being biased) but others on GZ may want to comment.

$200 to break the contract haha, got a mate on orcon, same modem stats as me, and he gets 18mbit down 850kbit up and 10 ping, sounds pretty good to me haha

whats wrong with the plan you are on the 2 year contract that you are looking at changing? Have you taken those issues up with the ISP to try to resolve them?

Speed seems to be getting slower and slower, and my upload won't go above 400kbit, on anything, even though my upload sync is 800, use to be able to get 620kbit on speedtest.net ,and my international speed seems to be capped. And they just say nothing wrong with my line haha, so I would like to move :)
