OK Neal,
As previously stated, I cannot keep the XT USB Modem powered up overnight with or without the computer unless Telecom keeps the sun shining.. Solar Power & Off grid.
So what do I do?

Telecom Help line overloaded.

NealR: All SIM cards are in the process of being upgraded over the air. There is not really a need to swap the SIM card.

The question then is... How do we know the SIM has been updated? I have a data only SIM that lives in a Sierra Wireless USB modem that is not always powered on. So I put it on a LG Android device - but how do I know when it's done its thing and I can remove it?

Would the store be able to swap number to an updated sim?

What is the upgrade designed to achieve? Would most end users without the blackberry issue care if it updates or not? IMO forced updates are seldom good.

Data cards are a challenge to update as you describe. However the update does not do anything for data cards so it's not so much of a deal if your data card SIM card is not updated.

Info from Telecom Help Line: They actually phoned me back. Yep time to buy a lotto ticket :~)
Simple really, go into the nearest Telecom store and get a replacement SIM card Version 3 at no cost..

I see my SIM now has an additional 'SIM application' that has a 'roaming menu'. Which states v3.0 under 'version'. Once you find this you can be sure you're all up to date I presume?

What does the upgrade do?  How do I check if it has been done on my Nokia 5800?  I can't seem to find any Sim Card details at all.

It improves the roaming experience around the application Telecom uses on the SIM.

Nokia's will display a SIM menu if they have been upgraded, at least my E71 does.

Was about to ask where/which menu.......then I found it..... in the Applications Menu there's a sim card like icon hidden there with TelecomNZ under it.  Shows v3.0 so must have been updated over the air.  I didn't even know it had happened.  :)
