Alarm Box with Uniden mobile phone inside.

"trunk unit" , turns a standard pstn phone into a mobile.

both analogue of course.

The latter was used for the trailered payphone i believe, I have a number of these (6) and found one more at Surplustronics. (it's still there if anyone is interested)

Scary things.

CDMA trunking units are available here now too...

This shows how far we have come, Now CDMA trunks are avail, the 025 users have no reason to complain. 025 has got terrible coverage, really patchy,I finallt retired my Nokia 8260 as it's just too old now,, Only Auntie still has an 025, still on an old pre pay call plan called "restricted" with 99c peak/49c off peak, calls charged by second after first minute
I wonder how this will go down?

Mum changed to 027 a year ago. now to get her into text!

I'm quoting relatives as eveyone else I know got 027 within a year of launch!

When I was up there earlier last year (my fav haunt when I'm in Auckland!) they had a NZ made GSM trunk unit with an old Ericsson 628 in it. The guy had no idea what it was and I was keen on it just for a toy. After plugging it in to see how it worked the guy fell in love with it because his parents in Fiji only have marginal cellphone coverage and no landline so he wanted to send it over to them so they could hook phones up inside their house. He sounded like he'd be depressed if I walked out of the store with it so I left it for him to buy! :-)

OMG i remember that, the indian dude is really cool, I recall now they also made one out of an Ericsson ah 237 for telecom and all sorts of other neato stuff with those phones! unidens were the most used, it's a uniden phone/base in both the images

Unsurprisingly, 025 coverage at this end of the country still kicks butt over 027. I have got a lot of clients who are gonna be real upset when their 3W carphones will need to be ripped out.

Wasn't there an ad campaign not so long ago where Telecom told people they were going to get coverage on mountains, in-between floors of a building, etc.? Or was that just for the North Island? :)
